@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball tops St. Joseph’s (L.I.) in Skyline Conference opener

Old Westbury improved to 7-6 on the season with Friday’s 44-38 road win

PATCHOGUE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team opened Skyline Conference play on Friday evening with a 44-38 road win over the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles from Danzi Center in Patchogue, New York.  With the win, Old Westbury improved to 7-6 on the season while sending the Golden Eagles' overall record to 3-9 and 1-1 in conference action.

A collective effort between Kendra Jordan, Raven Pentz and Crystal Barnes put Old Westbury in front with a 6-0 lead 3:02 into play.  Midway through the half, Jordan connected on a jumper to extend Old Westbury's lead to 10 points (13-3) with 10:35 showing on the first-half clock.  Imani Lariosa then connected on a three pointer with 5:54 left to give Old Westbury a 16-8 lead.  The Panthers hit a cold spell down the stretch, missing its final nine field goal attempts as the Golden Eagles used a 7-0 run over the final 5:31 to cut down their deficit with a 16-15 score at the half.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) scored first in the final stanza as Andrea Iavarone's jumper gave the Golden Eagles its lone lead of the game.  Chloe Mellon answered with a bucket of her own to put Old Westbury up for good with 19:56 left.  Mellon's jumper sparked a 10-2 run for a 26-19 edge with 16:50 remaining.  St. Joseph's (L.I.) stuck around late and a Jackie Zizzo triple at the 7:47 mark capped a 6-0 Golden Eagle run to make it a one-point game (31-30).  Barnes and Bridgid McNeill each knocked down jumpers, and with three minutes left, Jordan hit from long distance to put Old Westbury up 38-32.  Old Westbury sank 6-of-8 from the free-throw line over the final 1:37 to stretch its lead to nine points to secure the win.

Pentz matched a season-high with 16 points to lead all scorers.  Barnes ripped down a career-best 17 boards in addition to contributing eight points and two blocked shots.  Olivia Ilardi also set a career-high with 15 rebounds.  Jordan finished with nine rebounds (career-high), seven points and two steals while Mellon chipped in with eight rebounds and three blocks.

Rynese Smith paced the Golden Eagles with eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks to go along with five steals.  Teddi Petre nabbed a game-high six steals while Iavarone and Meaghan Haber each added three thefts.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 26.8 percent from the field (15-56), 31.3 percent from three-point range (5-16) and 60 percent from the free-throw line (9-15) while St. Joseph's (L.I.) hit just 16.7 percent from the floor (13-78), 10.7 percent from beyond the arc (3-28) and 52.9 percent from the charity stripe (9-17).  Old Westbury grabbed a season-best 69 boards to hold a +25 rebounding edge.  St. Joseph's (L.I.) swept away 18 steals and scored 17 of its points off 31 Panther turnovers.
