@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball routs York 86-56 for sixth-straight win

Old Westbury next takes its longest winning streak since 2013 to Keystone on Sunday (Jan. 3)

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball rolled past the York Cardinals (2-9) Wednesday evening with an 86-56 non-conference road victory from York College Gym.  The Panthers won their sixth game in a row, their longest win streak since January 2013, and moves into the 2016 calendar year with an 8-2 record. 

The game featured one tie as York's Samantha Bond made it a 2-2 game 1:17 into play.  Crystal Barnes put Old Westbury up for good with a layup 1:16 later for the Panthers' wire-to-wire victory.  Bond kept the Cardinals within striking distance by scoring 12 of York's 16 first-quarter points. 

Clinging to a 19-16 lead at the end of 10 minutes of play, Raven Pentz connected on a three pointer to spark a 15-2 Panther run to make it a 34-18 game.  York answered with a 9-4 spurt to cut the deficit down to nine points (38-29) with 2:19 remaining in the half.  Jasmine Robinson dropped in a layup to put the Panthers up by double digits for good as Old Westbury took a 40-29 lead into intermission.     

Bridgid McNeill's layup gave Old Westbury its first 20-point lead (57-37) of the game with 3:35 left in the third quarter.  Old Westbury's lead later blossomed to 23 points (63-40) off a layup by Monique Joseph.  York's Angelika Ruggiano netted four-straight points to trim the deficit to 19 points (63-44) with 28 seconds remaining.  Nikki Alexander answered for Old Westbury with a layup 10 seconds later to bring the lead back to 20-plus points. 

Old Westbury opened the fourth quarter with a 13-4 run to take a game-high 30-point lead (78-48). 

Barnes used 17 points (8-of-11 FG) and 10 rebounds to go along with three steals for her 15th career double-double.  Pentz contributed 14 points (6-of-13 FG), seven assists (zero turnovers), five rebounds and two steals to the win while McNeill racked up 14 points (7-of-10 FG) and eight rebounds.  Robinson followed with 12 points (2-of-3 3FG), four assists and two steals.  Joseph added eight points, seven rebounds and two steals. 

Bond and Ruggiano paced York with 23-point performances.  Jigcara Grant registered eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds. 

Old Westbury connected on 49.3 percent (37-of-75) from the field and landed 33 percent (5-of-15) from three-point range and 50 percent (7-of-14) from the free-throw line.  The Cardinals shot 30 percent (18-of-60) from the floor, 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from behind the arc and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury finished with a +20 rebounding margin (53-33), scoring 23 second-chance points off 21 offensive boards.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in assists (25-5), steals (12-6), blocks (2-1), points in the paint (48-24), points off turnovers (24-23) and bench points (29-0).   


KEYSTONE GIANTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens its 2016 calendar year on the road Sunday (Jan. 3) at 3 p.m. in non-conference action against the Keystone Giants in La Plume, Pennsylvania.
