Old Westbury improves to 2-1 in Skyline Conference play with Saturday’s home win

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- 
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday with a 74-53 Skyline Conference win at home over the Maritime Privateers.  With the win, Old Westbury (2-4) improves to 2-1 in conference play while sending Maritime (0-6) off to a 0-1 start. 

After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, Old Westbury fell behind as the Privateers used an 11-2 run from 17:32 to 15:10 to grab a five-point advantage (11-6).  P.J. Page connected from three-point range at 13:49 to put the Panthers up for good with a 14-13 lead.  Old Westbury took hold of the game with a 17-5 spurt for an eight-point cushion (24-16).  The first-half lead grew to 18 points off the Panthers' 14-2 run that put the hosts up 38-20 with 3:35 remaining.  Old Westbury shot 47.1 percent (16-of-34) from the field to take a commanding 42-25 lead into intermission.

Maritime trimmed the second-half deficit to 12 (43-21) by scoring six of the opening seven points to start the period.  Stephon Odle then sank a three pointer to kick-start a 13-2 Old Westbury run from 11:43 to 8:11 to extend its lead to a game-high 24 points (66-42).  Maritime pulled within 19 points with 3:25 showing on the second-half clock but were unable to overcome the deficit. 

Jamail Stanley registered career-highs of 20 points (9-of-14 FG), four steals and four assists to pace the Panthers to victory.  Stanley ripped down eight boards as Mark Gjonlekaj contributed his fourth-career double-double by totaling 14 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocks and one steal.  Lylle Ryals netted 13 points (5-of-8 FG) off the bench and Luckens Victor added a season-best three blocks.

The Privateers were led by Patrick MacDonald, who racked up 10 points and 15 rebounds.  John Liccese knocked down a trio of three pointers and finished with 13 points (4-of-8 FG) and three steals. 

Old Westbury shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field while connecting on 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from three-point territory and a season-high 78.3 percent (18-of-23) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Maritime shot 28.4 percent (19-of-67) from the floor, 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from beyond the arc and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 45-44, while Maritime scored 13 second-chance points off 17 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury held the advantage in assists (14-11), steals (10-3), blocks (9-2), points in the paint (34-20), fast-break points (23-4) and bench scoring (19-12).  The Panthers also scored 20 points off 16 Privateer turnovers.         


MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the road Tuesday (Dec. 8) when they travel to take on the Mount Saint Mary Knights in Skyline Conference action at 8 p.m. in Newburgh, New York.
