Farmingdale State

Reynaldo Walters led all scorers with 22 points in Wednesday's Skyline Conference showdown

FARMINGDALE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team traveled to nearby Farmingdale, New York on Wednesday evening to battle the Farmingdale State Rams in a Skyline Conference showdown from Walter A. Lynch Sports Center.  Despite a game-high 22 points from Reynaldo Walters, the Panthers were unable to covert down the stretch and succumbed to the host Rams, 54-50.  With the win, Farmingdale State (7-14) moves to 5-9 in league play while the Panthers (8-13) dropped to 5-9 in conference action.

Walters paced Old Westbury with 7-of-19 shooting from the field and added three steals and three assists.  Mark Gjonlekaj followed with 11 points (5-13 FG), three blocks and three steals.  Floyd Leroy pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

The trio of Trey Kinard, Anthony Lanieri and Eddie Kinloch all led Farmingdale State with nine points each.  Ruben Terrero dished out five assists and Eriq Williams and Weldon Irvine each grabbed eight boards.

It was a highly contested and tight final three minutes of action. Walters reclaimed the lead for Old Westbury, nailing two free throws to put the Panthers up, 48-47, with 2:58 left in regulation. The Panthers' tenacious defense forced three straight Farmingdale State turnovers, however, Old Westbury was unable to push their lead.  Terrero's layup gave the Rams back, 49-48, and Kinloch followed with a layup of his own to stretch the Rams' lead, 51-48, with 39 seconds left.  On the ensuing Old Westbury possession, Walters scored to trim the deficit to one, 51-50, with 25 seconds remaining.  The Panthers immediately fouled Kinloch, who proceeded to convert on consecutive free throws, putting Farmingdale State up 53-50.  Old Westbury had two chances to potentially tie the game at 53 and missed on a pair of three-point attempts as the Rams came away with the defensive rebound and sealed the win off Terrero's free throw.

Luckens Victor's layup at the 16:16 mark of the second half ignited a 10-2 Old Westbury spurt, leading 34-24.  The hosts climbed back within four points, 37-33, at the 13:02 mark of the second.  Lanieri's three pointer at 6:20 gave Farmingdale State their first lead of the game, 40-39, which ended a 7-1 Rams' scoring spree.

Both teams shot under 30 percent from the floor in an offensive struggle during the first half.  Old Westbury opened the game on a 15-4 surge within game's first five minutes of action fueled by six Gjonlekaj points.  His jumper at the 15:33 mark was the last made basket for Old Westbury over the game's next minutes of play.  Farmingdale State capitalized on the 11 missed shots by the Panthers and went on a 9-0 run, cutting the deficit to two, 15-13, with 6:08 left in the first half.  Jaquan Potter's layup snapped the Panthers' scoring drought, as he proceeded to nail a three pointer to put Old Westbury up by five, 20-15, at 5:36.  The hosts crawled back twice, however, two buckets by Walters gave Old Westbury a 24-22 lead heading into the break.

In the contest, Farmingdale State shot 34.5 percent from the field (19-55), while Old Westbury shot 30.2 percent (19-63). The Rams collected 53 total rebounds in comparison to Old Westbury's 37 in the game.

MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury will look to rebound from Wednesday's loss when they travel to take on the Mount Saint Mary Knights on Saturday (Feb. 14) in a Skyline Conference battle at 3 p.m. from Kaplan Center in Newburgh, New York.
