@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball, St. Joseph’s (L.I.) battle in Skyline Conference showdown

Omari Trebuse connected on a career-best five three pointers on his way to scoring 20 points in Thursday’s Skyline Conference matchup

PATCHOGUE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball fell 68-67 on the road Tuesday evening in Skyline Conference action as the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles snapped the Panthers' four-game winning streak from Danzi Center.  With the loss, Old Westbury (7-11) now moves to 7-4 in conference play while the Golden Eagles (12-7) improved to 9-3.

Old Westbury scored three Panthers in double digits as Reynaldo Walters led the way with a game-high 21 points (7-12 FG, 3-4 3FG) off the bench.  Omari Trebuse followed with a career-high five three-pointers in eight attempts on his way to scoring 20 points (7-12 FG) to tie a personal-best mark previously set against Alvernia (Dec. 30, 2013).  Floyd Leroy added 10 points and seven rebounds while Kaleem Edwards produced nine points (4-6 FG), 10 rebounds (career-high), two steals and one block.

Andy Laurent's 16 points off the bench paced the Golden Eagles to victory.  Evan Mohammed and Fernando Vazquez followed with 13 points each while Nick Gallina registered game-highs of six assists and five steals.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) jumped ahead early by six with back-to-back triples by Vasquez and Mohammed to grab the lead.  Old Westbury countered with a 16-5 run, keyed by a trio of three pointers from Trebuse for a 16-11 Panther advantage with 14:51 left.  Old Westbury later used a 16-5 run to go ahead by eight (32-24) with 8:12 showing on the first-half clock.  Edwards closed out the scoring with 49 seconds left in the half, sinking a jumper to send Old Westbury into the break on top, 40-36.

Old Westbury continued it push and extended its lead to as many as nine points in the second half for a 50-41 lead with 10:48 remaining.  St. Joseph's (L.I.) would chip away at Old Westbury's lead, using a quick 6-0 run to make it a 50-47 game with 9:42 left.  Old Westbury would regain its composure to go back up by five off Walters' triple with 2:16 showing on the clock to make it a 62-57 game.  OId Westbury held a four-point lead (66-62) with 51 seconds left before Mohammed connected from beyond the arc to make it a 66-65 contest.  Leroy sank a free throw to put Old Westbury up 67-65 with 33 seconds remaining.  Following a Vasquez turnover, Walters missed on a trip to the line which allowed Laurent to bury the game-winning three-pointer with seven seconds left to complete the comeback.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 43.1 percent from the field (25-58), 45 percent from three-point territory (9-20) and 53.3 percent from the free-throw line (8-15) while St. Joseph's (L.I.) landed 42.9 percent from the floor (24-56), 50 percent from beyond the arc (13-26) and 58.3 percent from the charity stripe (7-12).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 41-31, scoring just seven second-chance points off 13 offensive rebounds.  The Golden Eagles capitalized on the Panthers miscues, scoring 22 points off 16 Old Westbury turnovers.

MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury will look to rebound from Tuesday's setback when they continue Skyline Conference play on the road against the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins on Thursday (Feb. 5) at 7 p.m. from Peter Jay Sharp Center in Riverdale, New York.
