@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball scores two in double figures against Mount Saint Vincent

Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 7) at home against Yeshiva at 8:30 p.m.

RIVERDALE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball lost a 78-68 Skyline Conference decision on the road to the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins on Thursday evening from Peter Jay Sharpe Center.  Old Westbury (7-12) now stands at 7-5 in conference play while Mount Saint Vincent (14-6) improved to 10-3.

Luckens Victor dropped in a layup to open the scoring books 11 seconds into play for an early 2-0 Old Westbury advantage.  Jesse Regina answered with a jumper to tie the game at the 9:18 mark.  Both teams then went cold, combining to miss on their next 10 field-goal attempts until Mark Gjonlejak put the Panthers ahead 4-2 with a layup at 15:03.  James Zuccaro's layup with 14:41 left sparked a 10-0 Dolphin run for a 12-4 Mount Saint Vincent lead with 12:20 left in the half.  Following a Stephon Odle three pointer which ended Mount Saint Vincent's scoring spree, the Dolphins put together a 14-2 run to take a 17-point lead (26-9) with 7:51 showing on the first-half clock.  The Dolphins extended its first-half lead off Zuccaro's layup to close out the half with a 44-25 advantage.

Mount Saint Vincent pushed its lead to a game-high 21 points with Jamir Ferebee's layup to put the Dolphins up 46-25 with 19:42 remaining.  Mount Saint Vincent maintained its double-digit lead until Old Westbury strung together an 11-1 run from 6:21 to 3:58 to make it an eight-point game (61-53).  Moments later, Old Westbury pulled within six points after scoring eight of the next 10 points for a 69-63 game with 2:05 showing on the second-half clock.  Mount Saint Vincent outscored Old Westbury 9-5 over the final 1:52 to hold on for the 10-point victory.

Gjonlekaj and Reynaldo Walters each scored 14 points off the bench to lead Old Westbury.  Gjonlekaj hit 3-of-7 from three-point range while Walters added four assists.  Jaquan Potter nabbed four steals and Justin Mize tied his career-highs with eight rebounds and two steals.  Victor followed with seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals as Kaleem Edwards chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

Regina posted game-highs of 19 points (4-4 3FG) and six assists to pace Mount Saint Vincent.  Ferebee followed with 18 points and Zuccaro added 16.  Ammad Alkhulaidi pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 34.8 percent from the field (24-69), 24 percent from three-point territory (6-25) and 53.8 percent from the free-throw line (14-26) while Mount Saint Vincent landed 46.8 percent from the floor (22-47), 44.4 percent from beyond the arc (8-18) and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe (26-39).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 46-38, scoring 14 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also converted 17 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers into 14 points.

YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury will look to rebound from Thursday's setback when they host the Yeshiva Maccabees for a Skyline Conference battle on Saturday (Feb. 7) at 8:30 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center.  Earlier in the evening, Old Westbury will host its annual basketball alumni day, with the women playing at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 6 p.m.
