POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse captured an 8-7 season-opening win against the Bard Raptors (0-1) Tuesday evening from Tenney Field on the campus of Marist College.  The win was Old Westbury's first season-opening victory in the program's short three- year history.

Old Westbury threatened early when Gabriella DiPierno fired the game's first shot 3:19 into play to challenge Bard goalie Kaylynn Tran.  Both teams played even until the 7:39 mark when Bard's Alexandra Clarke broke the scoring ice for the 1-0 lead.  Sara Bey answered 5:39 later with Old Westbury's first goal of the season to tie the game (1-1).  Bard poured on a late goal with 1:16 remaining by Philippine Alba to double the Raptors' advantage for a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

Bard opened the second-half scoring with 27:02 left off Avalon Quian's goal for a 3-1 lead.  Bard would then capitalize with a player-advantage goal by Clarke with 21:21 remaining to go ahead 4-1.  Bey registered her 10th career multi-goal game when she rattled the back of the cage at 17:43 to slice the deficit in half (4-2).  Down 5-2, Danielle Weir scored her first-career goal at 16:11 to spark a 5-0 Panther run.  Emily Powell's goal with 10:34 left tied the game (5-5) before Courtney Gallagher found Halle Johnson at 8:14 to give the Panthers a 6-5 lead.  Powell's goal at 6:23 capped the run as the Panthers took a two-goal lead (7-5).  Bard answered with a player-advantage goal at 4:07 by Ruquiyah Mukarram, and a Joanna Regan goal at 1:37, to tie the game (7-7).  Weir then beat Tran with one second showing on the second-half clock to lift the Panthers to an 8-7 triumph.

In all five different Panthers scored, which also included solo goals by Gallagher and Halle Johnson during the five-goal spurt.  In the center circle, Christine Fernandez came away with a career-high two draw controls.  In goal, Ashley Gugliuzzo made six saves and scooped up three ground balls to record her first-career win.  Taylor Guarneri racked up three ground balls and Jordan Schildt caused three turnovers, followed by Fernandez's two.

Tran finished with eight saves and Regan racked up a game-high seven draw controls in Bard's loss.

Despite the loss, Bard held the advantage in shots (23-20), ground balls (22-16), draw controls (12-4).
