@OW_Panthers Women’s Lacrosse battles Wilkes

The Panthers continue play on the road when they take on Richard Stockton on March 17 in Pomona, New Jersey

SCRANTON, PA (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse traveled to Scranton, Pennsylvania to battle the Wilkes Colonels on Friday afternoon from Marywood University's Turf Field. The hosts led wire-to-wire, as they defeated the Panthers, 21-7, in a non-conference tilt. Old Westbury moves to 1-1 on the season, while Wilkes ups their record to 2-1.

Courtney Gallagher tallied three points on two goals and one assist to lead the Panthers while teammate Danielle Weir notched two goals. Goalie Ashley Gugliuzzo recorded six saves in the loss.  Caitlin Thomas scooped up a career-best five ground balls and Gallagher followed with four.  Emily Powell corralled a team-leading five draw controls and Weir added three (career-high).

Carley Smith and Madeleine Brownsey paced the Colonels' offensive attack. Smith accumulated for ten points on four goals and six assists, while Brownsey recorded six goals and four assists.

Wilkes jumped on the board early on three goals off the stick of Brownsey in the opening 4:32. Her first goal came at the 27:28 mark, after she caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, and fired the ball into the back of the net. Wilkes won the ensuing draw-control, and on a free-position shot, Brownsey scored her second goal 58 seconds later for a 2-0 lead. Smith passed the ball to Brownsey who scored her third goal of the contest at 25:28 of the first half for a 3-0 Wilkes advantage.

Old Westbury trimmed the deficit to two, 3-1, at the 25:03 mark. Powell won the draw-control, passed the ball to Taylor Guarneri, and Guarneri found an open Gallagher, who shot the ball past Colonels goalie Kellie Kalada. Less than three minutes later, Halle Johnson scored for Old Westbury to make it 4-2 contest. After Johnson's goal, the Colonels seized control of the contest by scoring five consecutive goals punctuated by Jessyca Held's free position goal at the 14:37 mark, giving Wilkes a 9-2 lead.

Gallagher scored her second of the game at the 10:38 mark, trimming the deficit to six (9-3).  However, the hosts closed out the first half on a 6-1 spurt, taking a 15-4 lead into intermission. Old Westbury began the second half on fire with goals by Sara Bey and Gabriella DiPierno at the 29:14 and 24: 14, respectively, trimming the lead to nine (15 -6). The Panthers got within nine one more time on Weir's goal at the 21:06 mark, but could not inch closer, as Wilkes stretched their lead back to double-digits.

As a unit, Wilkes held the advantage in shots (33-12), ground balls (27-19), and draw controls (21-8) over Old Westbury.
