Hernandez lifts @OW_Panthers Baseball past Stevens for Stephan’s 100th career victory

Old Westbury rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win 6-3

HOBOKEN, NJ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball team traveled across the Hudson River to battle the Stevens Ducks on Friday afternoon from Dobbelaar Field in Hoboken, New Jersey.  The Panthers (1-2) collected their first win of the season, punctuated by Eddie Hernandez's game-winning, three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, to defeat Stevens (3-2) with a 6-3 final.

The win marked fifth-year head coach Rod Stephan's 100th of his career.

In the Panthers' seventh, Carlos Balmaceda roped a single up the middle and moved to second when Tommy Ziegen walked. Two  batters later, Hernandez stepped to the plate and connected on his first-career home run, giving Old Westbury their first lead of the  game, 6-3. The Ducks threatened in the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and second with two outs.  However, Panther  hurler Tim Ingram struck out Gregg Nickels to end the Ducks' eighth.

Stevens wasted no time to jump on the scoreboard, as they crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the first. Brian Hennelly belted  a RBI double to score Jonathan Toro, who led off the game with a double, for Stevens' first run of the contest. A few batters later,  Hennelly crossed the plate on a RBI base-hit by Zeph Walters for a 2-0 Ducks lead.  After both teams traded runs in the second inning, the Panthers knotted the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. Jacob Coners delivered the key two-run RBI double, scoring both Ziegen and Michael Cardino.

Hernandez and Balmaceda accumulated for eight of the Panthers' 12 hits in the contest. Overall, Hernandez batted 4-for-5 with a home run, double, and three RBI, while teammate Balmaceda went 4-for-4 with one run scored. Walters went 3-for-4 with RBI to lead Stevens.

Ingram (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in five relief innings pitched. He struck out six, allowed no runs, and gave two hits.  Starter Tyler Kapela recorded a no-decision in four innings pitched, as he allowed three runs (two earned) and fanned three. Gary Boardman (0-1) allowed three runs in two innings of relief to take the loss for Stevens.

LEHMAN LIGHTNING UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Tuesday (Mar. 17) to take on the Lehman Lightning in a 2 p.m. doubleheader from Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York.
