@OW_Panthers posts season-opening win at Snowbird Softball

Old Westbury earned a 12-4 season-opening win against SUNYIT in Myrtle Beach trip

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - For the second time in three years, SUNY Old Westbury softball opened the season with a win.  Old Westbury claimed a 12-4 season-opening win against the SUNYIT Wildcats March 13 from Snowbird Softball in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Old Westbury's record moved to 1-5 at the conclusion of the three-day trip.

March 13: Old Westbury 12, SUNYIT 4 (6 Inn.)
Amanda Fucci opened her career with a run-scoring single in the first inning to plate Gabriella Valdes for Old Westbury's first run of the season.  Jacqueline Perno followed with a two-run single in the first inning to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.  Alexis Ferrero cleared the bases in the second inning by clubbing her first-career grand slam to score Delana Murray, Gabriella Valdes and Corrine Protasiewicz for a commanding 7-0 lead.  Holding a five-run lead, Ferrero stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning to make it a 10-3 game.  Chernoff followed with an RBI double and Fucci added a run-scoring single for Old Westbury's final run.

Nicole DeCola (1-0) allowed one unearned run on six hits and two walks in five innings to secure Old Westbury's victory.  Ferrero hit 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a career-high six RBI.  Valdes and Protasiewicz each scored three runs while Chernoff crossed the plate twice.

Abby Black (1-3) paced SUNYIT with a two-run single in the third inning and Fallon Reinold (1-4) surrendered 12 runs (nine earned) in defeat for the Wildcats.

March 13: Mount Aloysius 13, Old Westbury 4 (6 Inn.)
Mount Aloysius scored first, collecting three runs on two hits and one error in the first inning.  Old Westbury answered in the home half of the first inning with a single run to cut into the deficit, making it a 3-1 game.  Fucci worked a bases loaded walk to score Katie Rizzo for Old Westbury's first run.  Valdes' single in the second inning knocked home Alicia Redguard to close the gap to one run (3-2).  Mount Aloysius tacked on one run in the third and two in the fourth to move its lead to 6-2.  Ferrero stroked a fourth inning run-scoring single to score Protasiewicz, which sliced Mount Aloysius' lead to three runs (6-3).  Mount Aloysius erupted for seven runs in the sixth before Protasiewicz doubled home Valdes to close out the scoring in the seventh inning.

Protasiewicz and Valdes each registered 3-for-4 performances at the plate to lead Old Westbury.  Fucci (0-1) allowed three earned runs on 14 hits and four walks in defeat for the Panthers.

Alexandria Teeter's 3-for-4 game with four RBI led Mount Aloysius' offense while Kelsey Ickes (2-2) tossed six strikeouts in six innings to secure the win.

March 14: Salem 20, Old Westbury 2 (5 Inn.)
Salem erupted for 13 runs on eight hits and two errors in the second inning to take a commanding 15-0 lead.  Protasiewicz doubled home Murray to put Old Westbury on the board in the third inning.  Murray then closed out the scoring in the fifth inning with a run-scoring single to advance Elizabeth Redguard across home plate for Old Westbury's final run.

Murray posted a 2-for-3 game at the plate to pace Old Westbury's offense.  Fucci (0-2) was dealt Old Westbury's loss, surrendering 12 earned runs on 10 hits and seven walks in two innings of work.

Brianna Morris (3-2) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks to earn Salem's win.  Zoe Wade's three hits led Salem's offense.

March 14: No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan 8, Old Westbury 0 (6 Inn.)
Old Westbury threatened early as Valdes reached base with a leadoff bunt single, and advanced to third on a throwing error.  The Panthers would strand Valdes to forfeit their best scoring opportunity against the national power Marlins.  Fucci kept the Marlins off the board until the fourth inning when Virginia Wesleyan posted four runs on three hits and two errors, followed by four more runs in the fifth to secure the victory.

Fucci (0-3) was dealt Old Westbury's loss, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and three walks in four innings of work.

Mary Shipp (4-0) tossed a two-hit shutout while Elizabeth Bailey (2-3, RBI, R), Kayla Dost (2-2, RBI) and Megan Meindl (2-3, 2 R, RBI, SB) each collected two hits to lead the Marlins to victory.

March 15: Rutgers-Newark 10, Old Westbury 0 (5 Inn.)
Kelly Yusko's three-run homer in the first inning set the tone for Rutgers-Newark's offense.  Yusko swatted a big fly in the third inning to make it a 7-0 game.  In total, Rutgers-Newark clubbed five home runs.  Ferrero singled in the fourth inning to break up Yusko's no-hit bid.

Yusko (1-0) fanned six Panthers in five innings to record the one-hit shutout while contributing a 3-for-3 (six RBI, 2 R) performance at the plate.

DeCola (1-1) allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in defeat for the Panthers.   Ferrero singled in the fourth inning to register Old Westbury's lone hit.

March 15: No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan 8, Old Westbury 0 (5 Inn.)
Virginia Wesleyan scored two runs on two errors in the second inning to jump ahead early.  The Marlins scored one run in the third and totaled five more in the fourth to claim victory.

Casey Newcomb (1-0) fired six strikeouts to toss a five-inning no-hitter with two walks allowed.  Teresa Cardamne racked up two hits and scored twice to lead Virginia Wesleyan.

Fucci (0-4) took Old Westbury's loss, working four innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits.  Rizzo reached base with a one-out walk in the first and Fucci garnered a walk in the second inning.
