@OW_Panthers Softball tangles with Staten Island

Old Westbury returns home Thursday for a Skyline Conference showdown versus Mount Saint Vincent

STATEN ISLAND, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -SUNY Old Westbury softball returned to action Wednesday after having last taken the field March 15 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  The Panthers (1-7) fell 4-0 and 8-5 on the road to the Staten Island Dolphins (7-3) from CSI Softball Complex.

Game One: Staten Island 4, Old Westbury 0
Gabriella Valdes led off the game with a single before Staten Island starting right-hander Jacqueline Cautela (4-2, 7 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 5 K) retired the next 20 Panthers to secure her one-hit shutout.  Staten Island's Brittany Smith (3-for-4, 3B, 2 R, 2 SB) scored the game-winning run in the first inning as Chyanne Gilliam reached on a fielder's choice.  Danielle Locke then followed with an infield grounder to shortstop Amanda Fucci, which scored Christina Tufano for a two-run lead.

Staten Island tacked on solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings off Panther starting right-hander Nicole DeCola (1-2, 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K).

Game Two: Staten Island 8, Old Westbury 5
Alicia Redguard broke the scoring ice by doubling home Jacqueline Perno in the second inning to put the Panthers ahead, 1-0.

Old Westbury broke through in the third with a pair of runs to take a 3-0 lead.  Alexis Ferrero (1-for-4, 3 RBI, R, 2B) doubled the Panthers advantage by driving in Fucci (1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB) off an error by left fielder Locke to make it a 2-0 game.  Brittany Chernoff then doubled to score Ferrero for the three-run lead.

Staten Island answered in the home half of the third with five runs off four hits and two errors to take a 5-3 lead.  Tufano's (3-for-4, 4 RBI, R, SB) two-run single sparked the Dolphins' big inning while RBI doubles by Locke and Maxine Jasko (2-for-3, RBI, 2B) contributed to the lead.

Cautela's (2-for-3, RBI, R) two-out RBI single scored Gianna DeCesare for the game-winning run, making it a 6-3 game in the fourth inning.

Down 7-3 in the fifth, Staten Island starting right-hander Nicolette Trapani (3-1, 7 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) served up a double to Ferrero, which scored Fucci and Corrine Protasiewicz (2-for-4, R, 2B) to slice the deficit to 7-5.

Staten Island added an insurance run off Old Westbury starting right-hander Fucci (0-5, 10 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) in the sixth as Tufano stroked a two-out RBI single to close out the scoring.
