@OW_Panthers Women’s Lacrosse charge late in Skyline Conference showdown at Mount Saint Mary

Old Westbury held a 5-4 second-half scoring advantage


NEWBURGH, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -The SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse team fell 13-9 to the Mount Saint Mary Knights in a Skyline Conference road battle from Kaplan Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Panthers (1-5) now stand at 0-2 in conference play while Mount Saint Mary (3-4) advanced to 1-0.   

Courtney Gallagher and Halle Johnson combined to score all four of Old Westbury's first-half goals en route to racking up hat tricks to lead Old Westbury's offense.  Gallagher tied a program record with six caused turnovers in addition to scooping up a career-best six ground balls.  Sara Bey followed with a pair of goals, three draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.  Danielle Weir tied a career-high with four draw controls and chipped in with one goal and one assist on the day. Weir's goal extended her program-record to six games for consecutive goal-scoring streak to start a career.  Ashley Gugliuzzo (1-5) picked up two ground balls and stopped a career-best 11 shots for Old Westbury.       

Clair Duffy opened the scoring 54 seconds into play to give Mount Saint Mary an early advantage.  Gallagher answered with Old Westbury's first goal with 18:45 remaining to make it a 2-1 game.  Johnson added two-consecutive goals at 16:26 and 14:52 to bring the Panthers within one score (4-3).  Gallagher's goal at 8:33 halted a 3-0 Mount Saint Mary run to slice the Panthers' deficit to 7-4.  Katie Gattoni closed out the first-half scoring with her third and fourth goals of the period to give the Knights a 9-4 lead at intermission. 

Fae Kuhnen put the Knights up 10-4 with 28:46 showing on the second-half clock to score the eventual game-winning goal.  Weir sparked a 4-0 Panther run with her goal at 23:01 to slice Old Westbury's deficit in half (10-5).  Johnson (17:42), Gallagher (15:35) and Bey (13:48) closed out the run to make it a 10-8 game.  Gattoni then answered at 10:06 with her fifth goal of the game to open a 3-0 Knight run.  Bey closed out the scoring with her second goal of the game with 3:45 remaining for a 13-9 final. 

Duffy and Amanda Clemens each tallied four draw controls while Duffy, Nicole Scicuetell and Courtney Blanton added five ground balls apiece for Mount Saint Mary.  Carly Lennon (2-3) made five saves to earn the win.

In the end, Mount Saint Mary held the advantage in shots (31-17), shots on goal (24-14), ground balls (25-16) and draw controls (16-8).   


FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action at home on Thursday (Apr. 2) to take on the Farmingdale State Rams at 3 p.m. in a Skyline Conference battle from Panther Park in Old Westbury, New York.
