@OW_Panthers Women’s Lacrosse battles Farmingdale State in home opener

Danielle Weir extended her goal-scoring streak to seven games

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse fell behind early and lost a 15-4 Skyline Conference decision at home to the Farmingdale State Rams on Thursday afternoon from Panther Park.  Old Westbury (1-6) moved 0-3 in conference play while the Rams (4-3) advanced to 2-0. 

Courtney Gallagher scored twice to lead Old Westbury, while Danielle Weir and Sara Bey chipped in with one goal apiece.  Bey and Gallagher each added three ground balls. 

Nicole Marzocca paced Farmingdale State's offensive attack with a game-high seven points on one goal and six assists.  Kristen Keller recorded four points as she posted two goals and two assists.  

Marzocca and Keller combined to accumulate seven points during the Rams' 6-0 run to open the game.  Marzocca assisted on the first three Farmingdale State goals and later scored her fourth of the season, putting the visitors ahead 4-0 at the 25:57 mark.  Keller gave the Rams a six-goal cushion with her second goal of the game with 17:32 left.  Gallagher got Old Westbury on the scoreboard with her tenth goal of the year at the 13:38 mark.  Farmingdale State seized Old Westbury's momentum as the Rams scored four more times to take a 10-1 advantage into intermission.

Weir tallied her 11th goal of the season with 22:35 left in regulation to trim the deficit to 10-2.  Her goal extended the freshman's program-record to seven games for consecutive goal-scoring streak to start a career.  After the visitors scored the ensuing three goals, Gallagher recorded her second of the game at 9:38 (13-3).  Both teams were held scoreless for the next 7:36 of play until Jessica Romero tallied her fourth score of the season to make it a 14-3 game.  Bey closed out the scoring with 1:20 left on a free position tally.

As a unit, Farmingdale State held the advantage in shots (29-9) and draw controls (17-4) over Old Westbury.  Old Westbury's Ashley Gugliuzzo (1-6) stopped seven shots while her counterpart Krista Spagnoletta (4-3) recorded four saves.


AUTISM AWARENESS GAME VERSUS MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action at home on Wednesday (Apr. 8) for its Autism Awareness game versus the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins at 3 p.m. in a Skyline Conference battle from Panther Park in Old Westbury, New York.
