@OW_Panthers Baseball stretches streak to nine before splitting with Maritime

Christopher Vitale earned game one's win in Monday’s home opener

Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball extended its winning streak to nine games Monday evening with a 7-4 come-from-behind victory over the Maritime Privateers in Skyline Conference action from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Maritime held off the Panthers to win 4-2 in the night cap to snap the host's streak in Old Westbury.  The split moves Old Westbury (9-3) to 3-1 in conference play while Maritime (4-7) evened up at 1-1.

Game One: Old Westbury 7, Maritime 4
The Panthers pushed their winning streak behind a five-run eighth inning in which they sent 10 batters to the plate.  Jacob Coners led off the stanza with an infield single, and moved up 90 feet when he reached second base safely on Eddie Hernandez's hit-and-run grounder up the middle.  Nick Yip's RBI single up the middle plated Coners to bring Old Westbury within a 4-3 score, before Hernandez scored on Jonathan Pagan's opposite-field single to right to knot the score at 4-all.  Three batters later, Robert Crocitto's (2-for-3) bases-loaded walk forced home Pagan with the eventual winning run, with Faust and Cardino adding insurance runs on Carlos Balmaceda's fielder's choice and Tommy Ziegen's (1-for-2, 2 RBI) single to right, respectively.  With the single, Ziegen extended his hitting streak to eight games.

The visiting Privateers drew first blood in the top of the first inning off Old Westbury starting right-hander Nick Dorcean (6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K), when Brian McLaughlin's fielder's choice up the middle sent Paul Woodburn home with the game's first run.

Faust tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when he came home on an infield error, before Ziegen's RBI ground out sent Crocitto across the dish with the go-ahead run.

Joe Longo's (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) left-side single tied the game at 2-2 one-half inning later, before Kevin Monahan and McLaughlin scored single runs in the fourth and fifth stanzas, respectively, to give the Privateers a 4-2 edge.

Christopher Vitale (1-0) tossed 2.1 innings of one-hit, one-strikeout relief to earn his first victory of the season for the Panthers, while Maritime reliever Anthony D'Ancona (1-3) took the loss after allowing his four batters to reach safely in relief of Ryan Alsdorf (7 IP, 5 H, 2 R) in the bottom of the eighth.

Game Two: Maritime 4, Old Westbury 2
McLaughlin's two-out RBI single in the fifth inning scored Chris Deddo for the go-ahead run off Panther starting left-hander Caleb Olesen to make it a 3-2 game.  Olesen (2-1, 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7K) was tabbed with his first loss of the season despite recording a career-best seven strikeouts.

The Privateers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth off two walks, one hit batsman, a wild pitch and three stolen bases to take a 4-2 lead.  Reliever Vinny Bieniek's wild pitch advanced Albert Doerbecker to third before scoring off a double steal to close out the scoring.

Olesen sat down five of his first-six batters faced on strikes to hold off the Privateers in the early going.

Longo drew a one-out walk in the second to reach base.  He then advanced to second off Olesen's throwing error over to first, and with two outs, he swept third and came home off catcher Brandon Stein's throwing error for a 1-0 Maritime lead.

Old Westbury quickly replied in the home half of the second inning.  Michael Cardino garnered a one-out walk before Matthew Taurisani collected a single for Old Westbury's first hit of the game.  Following a balk to advance runners to second and third, Brandon Stein sent a grounder to the second baseman to score Cardino for the game-tying run.

Maritime took a 2-1 lead in the fourth off Doerbecker's RBI single up the middle to score Matthew Sollin.  Sollin led off the frame with a single, advanced to second on a ground out and took third off Monahan's single.

Tuarisani delivered home Cardino off a sacrifice fly lifted to right field to knot the game at 2-all in the fourth inning.  Cardino once again reached base with a one-out walk.  Tyler Stuart's two-base throwing error over to first placed Cardino on third to set the table for Taurisani.

Stuart (2-0, 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 4 K) went the distance to earn his second win of the season.
