@OW_Panthers Baseball opens 2015 season at No. 7/15 Kean

Old Westbury travels back to Union, New Jersey Monday afternoon to take on Kean

UNION, NJ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened its 2015 campaign after winter weather forced cancellation of its previous 11 attempts.  Old Westbury fell 12-4 to the No. 7/15 Kean Cougars (4-0) Sunday afternoon from Jim Hynes '63 Baseball Stadium in Union, New Jersey.

Jacob Coners dropped a leadoff single (1-1) into center field for his 100th career hit to open the Panthers' season.  Coners was then thrown out trying to steal second before Nick Yip ripped a triple to right field.  Jonathan Pagan and Christian Faust both fouled out to strand Yip at third as Kean starter Christopher Rossi escaped out of the early jam.

Reigning Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year Tim Ingram took the mound for the Panthers.  Ingram surrendered a leadoff single, and four batters later a double by Andy Lopez scored Scott Durkin for Kean's first run.  Two batters later, a double steal allowed Salvatore Taormina to cross the plate to double Kean's advantage. Ingram settled down and retired his second batter on strikes to put an end to his 36-pitch first inning.

Kean took a 3-0 lead at the end of the second frame as Anthony Fischetti drew a walk to leadoff the inning.  Fischetti reached second on a wild pitch and a sacrifice hit moved him along to third before crossing the plate off Ingram's wild pitch.

The Cougars stroked a trio of RBI singles in the fifth inning off Ingram and reliever Caleb Olesen to take a 6-0 lead.

Old Westbury answered in the sixth with a two-out rally to score three runs to make it a 6-3 game.  Faust doubled home Coners for Old Westbury's first run of the season.  Two batters later, Michael Cardino singled in Faust to cut the deficit to four runs.  Kean reliever Richie Ferguson then uncorked a wild pitch, followed by a walk to Brandon Stein to load the bases.  With Tommy Ziegen at the plate, Robert Crocitto advanced home off Ferguson's balk for Old Westbury's third run of the inning.  Kean matched Old Westbury in the home half of the sixth with three more runs off Olesen to take a 9-3 lead.

Eddie Hernandez led off the seventh with a walk, stole second and scored two batters later off Yip's RBI single.  Pagan was then hit by the pitch and Crocitto's single then set the plate with the bases loaded for Cardino.  Ferguson struck out Cardino to strand three Panthers on base.

Kean tacked on three runs in the seventh off reliever Justin Mize to close out the scoring books.

Ingram (0-1) fanned four batters in 4.2 innings of work and was charged with four runs on four hits and six walks in defeat for Old Westbury.  Olesen and Mize combined to allow eight runs and five walks in 2.1 innings.  Christopher Vitale scattered two hits in working a scoreless ninth inning.

Rossi (1-0) allowed one run over five innings to claim Kean's win before Ferguson worked four innings for the save.

Yip's 2-for-4 day at the plate paced Old Westbury's offense.

Durkin (2-3, RBI, R, BB), Taormina (2-2, 2 R, RBI, 3 BB), Lopez (2-4, 2 RBI) and Ryan Reitmeyer (2-4, 3 R, 2 BB) all registered multi-hit games for Kean.

NO. 7/15 KEAN COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to Union, New Jersey on Monday afternoon for a rematch with the Kean Cougars at 3 p.m. from Jim Hynes '63 Baseball Stadium.
