@OW_Panthers Baseball battles No. 7/15 Kean

Old Westbury closed out a two-game series at nationally ranked Kean

UNION, NJĀ (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) -Ā SUNY Old Westbury baseball team fell 6-1 on the road Monday afternoon to the No. 7/15 Kean Cougars from Jim Hynes '63 Stadium in Union, New Jersey.Ā  With the loss, Old Westbury moves to 0-2 on the young season while Kean won its fifth straight to improve to 5-0.Ā  Ā
Ā
Eddie Hernandez stroked a one-out single to reach base in the first inning for Old Westbury.Ā  Hernandez then stole second before scoring off Dean Sheridan's two-out RBI single up the middle for an early 1-0 lead.Ā

Kean erased Old Westbury's lead with two runs in the home half of the first off Panther starter Nick Schoen.Ā  Matt Meleo laced a leadoff single to right, advanced to second on a ground out and stole third before Tom McGuckin's singled him home to tie the game.Ā  Three batters later, Ryan Reitmeyer lifted a sacrifice fly out to right field to score McGuckin for the go ahead run.Ā

After allowing a pair of runners to advance to scoring position in the second inning, Schoen worked himself out of a jam by using just four pitches to retire three-straight Cougars.Ā

Schoen would allow two runs in the fourth inning before reliever Tyler Kapela took over with a 4-1 deficit.Ā  Ā Ā

Kean starter Emilio Calderon retired 10 straight Panthers before serving up Michael Cardino's double down the left field line to leadoff the fifth inning.Ā

Kean's Salvatore Taormina made it a 6-1 game with a two-run single off reliever Vinny Bieniek in the eighth inning.Ā

Schoen (0-1) was charged with four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in three innings of work for the Panthers.Ā  Kapela tossed three scoreless innings followed by Nick Dorcean's scoreless seventh.

Hernandez finished with a team-best 2-for-4 day at the plate to pace the Panthers.Ā

Calderon (2-0) allowed one run on five hits while striking out three in eight innings of work to earn Kean's win.Ā  Ā Ā

Meleo (3-4, 2 R, RBI, 4 SB) and Andy Lopez (3-5, 2B) each produced three hits to lead Kean's offense.Ā Ā

STEVENS DUCKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS:Ā Old Westbury returns to action on Friday (Mar. 13) to take on the Stevens Ducks at 3 p.m. from Dobbelaar Field in Hoboken, New Jersey. Ā
