@OW_Panthers Baseball threatens late in home battle versus Manhattanville

Joey Walsh scored three runs and stole a career-best three bases in Wednesday’s non-conference showdown

Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball scored first and held a 3-2 lead at the end of six innings, but a seven-run seventh pushed the Manhattanville Valiants in front to claim Wednesday's 9-5 road victory from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury now stands at 9-4 on the season while the Valiants advanced to 8-7.

Manhattanville caught a major break in the seventh inning when right fielder Tyler Roberts dropped what would have been the third out.  The Valiants capitalized on the error as Joe Booker followed with a two-run double off reliever Nick Schoen (1-2, 2.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 0 ER, 2 K) to give the Valiants a 5-3 lead.  John Delahanty then stepped to the plate to deliver a pinch-hit double to score Booker for the game-winning run.

Joey Walsh's (2-for-4, 3 R, 3 SB) one-out single in the third inning put Old Westbury in the hit column off Manhattanville starting right-hander Anthony LoFaro (2-0, 6.2 UP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K).  Walsh then stole second and third base before scoring off catcher Antony Iannuzzi's throwing error for Old Westbury's 1-0 lead.

With two outs, Jordanis Nunez stroked a two-run single off Old Westbury's starting right-hander Justin Mize in the fourth inning to give Manhattanvile a 2-1 lead.

Walsh again sparked the Panthers in the fifth to tie the game, 2-2.  Walsh reached on Iannuzzi's throwing error, stole second and advanced to third off Jonathan Pagan's single before coming around to score off Iannuzzi's third-throwing error of the game.

Jake Schwartz's RBI single pushed Matthew Taurisani across home plate in the sixth for a 3-2 Old Westbury advantage.

Old Westbury scored twice in the ninth inning, but were unable to overcome Manhattanville's seven-run seventh.  Walsh delivered a one-out single and later advanced to third off shortstop Nunez's throwing error.  Joemarr Wilson would score Old Westbury's fourth run off Nunez's error.  Michael Cardino then grounded into a double play, which advanced Walsh home to close out the scoring.

ST. JOSEPH'S (BROOKLN) BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home for Friday's (Apr. 3) non-conference doubleheader against the St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears.  First pitch is set for 11 a.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
