@OW_Panthers Baseball battles St. Joseph’s (L.I.) in Skyline Conference twinbill

Old Westbury returns home on Sunday (Apr. 12) for a rematch of the 2014 Skyline Conference Championship versus Farmingdale State

PATCHOGUE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball team lost 5-4 and 4-1 Saturday to the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles in Skyline Conference action from Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue, New York.  The setback moves Old Westbury (11-7) to 3-3 in conference play while the Golden Eagles (11-9) remain in first place at 6-0.

Game One: St. Joseph's (L.I.) 5, Old Westbury 4
Old Westbury starting right-hander Tim Ingram (4-2) tossed 8.1 innings in defeat after fanning eight batters while allowing five runs (two earned) on nine hits and three walks.

Ingram took the mound in the ninth in search of his sixth-career complete game outing and issued a one-out walk to place Joseph Lynn (1-for-2, R, 2 BB) on base.  Center fielder Jonathan Pagan's two-base fielding error moved runners into scoring position before James Nakashian roped a two-run double to left center for his only hit of the game.  Left fielder Nick Yip then committed a two-base error which scored Nakashian for the game-tying run to end Ingram's day.  Brendan Sullivan (2-for-5, RBI) would reach on an error by Pagan to position runners at the corners.  Right-hander Justin Mize intentionally walked Joseph Calabrese to load the bases for Anthony Andreani (1-for-4, RBI), who drove a single to score Nick Girardi (3-for-5, R) for the game-winning run.

The Panthers pounced early with two runs in the opening frame to grab momentum.  Jacob Coners singled off Golden Eagles' starting right-hander Ryan Aloise (6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 B, 4 K) to leadoff the game.  Aloise then walked Eddie Hernandez (1-for-3, 2 R), followed by Yip's infield grounder that advanced runners over to second and third.  Pagan's (0-for-2, 2 RBI) sacrifice fly out to left field scored Coners for the game's initial run.  Christian Faust's RBI double would make it a 2-0 lead.

Ingram dealt out three singles in the third run as Sullivan's base hit scored Anthony Bonilla (2-for-5, 2 R) to slice the Golden Eagles' deficit in half (2-1).

Aloise retired 11 straight Panthers until Joey Walsh collected a one-out single in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to a career-best six games.

Old Westbury opened the sixth with back-to-back singles by Hernandez and Yip.  Pagan then scored Hernandez from third off a sacrifice fly to center field.  Déjà vu set in when Faust (2-for-3, 2 RBI) stroked an RBI double to make it a 4-1 game for Old Westbury's final run.

Matt Mills (1-1) tossed three hitless innings of relief to earn the Golden Eagles' win.

Game Two: St. Joseph's (L.I.) 4, Old Westbury 1
Nakashian belted a solo home run in the first off Panther starting right-hander Tyler Kapela (1-1, 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) to put St. Joseph's (L.I.) ahead early.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) added two more runs in the second to increase their lead.  With runners in scoring position, Bonilla's two-out single kept the inning alive by driving home Andreani and James Terry.

Ryan Walsh scored to give Golden Eagles a 4-0 lead at the end of four frames.  Walsh singled with one out, and then advanced to third off an error by first baseman Dean Sheridan (2-for-3, R).  Bonilla's sacrifice fly to right field scored Walsh to increase the Golden Eagles' lead.

Old Westbury threatened in the sixth when Walsh's (1-for-2, RBI, BB) leadoff single, followed by Coners' double, set the plate for the Panthers' two-three-four hitters. However, Golden Eagles' starting right-hander Josh Outsen (3-1), 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K) induced three-straight ground outs to escape the inning unscathed.

Sheridan's one-out single sparked the Panthers in the top of the seventh.  Tommy Ziegen followed with a double before Carlos Balmaceda was hit by the pitch to load the bases.  Walsh then drove home Sheridan off a fielder's choice.  With runners on the corners, Coners was unable to keep the inning alive and grounded out to end Old Westbury's rally.
