@OW_Panthers Women’s Lacrosse starts strong against first-place St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

Courtney Gallagher and Emily Powell each registered hat tricks in Tuesday’s Skyline Conference action

PATCHOGUE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse were unable to close the gap after trailing 8-6 at the half and suffered a 19-7 Skyline Conference road loss to the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles Tuesday evening from Danzi Stadium in Patchogue, New York.  The loss moves Old Westbury (2-8) to 1-4 in conference play while the Golden Eagles (9-3) advanced to 5-0.

The two teams traded goals in the early going as Emily Powell's second goal of the game tied the contest at 3-3 for the Panthers with 19:39 remaining in the half.  Heather Ferchland netted her second goal of the game at the 19:01 mark to spark a 4-0 Golden Eagle run for a 7-3 lead.  Courtney Gallagher's goal with 7:31 showing on the first-half clock ended the Golden Eagles' run to make it a three-goal game (7-4).  Nicole Lyman scored 11 seconds later to double the home team's advantage (8-4).  Gallagher and Powell answered with their third goals of the game at 3:49 and 1:16, respectively, to send an 8-6 game into intermission.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach for a 17-6 lead.  Gallagher scored her fourth goal of the game with 3:35 left for her team-leading 19th goal of the season.

Gallagher assisted on Old Westbury's first goal of the game and finished with four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Powell followed with one assist and three draw controls while Sara Bey chipped in with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Jordan Schildt contributed four ground balls and Danielle Weir controlled four draws on the day.  Weir's nine game program-record for consecutive goal-scoring streak to start a career came to an end after misfiring on five shot attempts.  Ashley Gugliuzzo (2-8) made 11 saves, scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers in defeat for Old Westbury.

Ferchland finished with a game-high five goals to go along with four ground balls and four draw controls to lead St. Joseph's (L.I.).  Courtney Wickline (9-3) made nine saves to earn the win.

In the end, St. Joseph's (L.I.) held the advantage in shots (39-23), shots on goal (30-16), ground balls (24-17) and draw controls (16-12)
