@OW_Panthers Softball battles Sage on Senior Day

Senior Corrine Protasiewicz played her final conference game Sunday

Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury softball played host to the Sage Gators for a Skyline Conference Senior Day doubleheader Sunday afternoon from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Gators (17-13 took both games with 6-1 and 14-0 finals to improve to 9-5 in conference play while sending the Panthers (5-23) to 2-12.  Prior to first pitch, senior catcher Corrine Protasiewicz was honored during the annual Senior Day Ceremony for her dedication to Old Westbury Athletics.

Game One: Sage 6, Old Westbury 1
Alana Vanderburg (2-for-4, 2 R) led off the second with a single and scored two batters later off Katy Rimawi's RBI single to break the scoring ice for the Gators.  Two batters later, Samantha Woitkoski singled to score Rimawi to double the Gators' advantage off Panther starting right-hander Nicole DeCola (3-11, 7 IP, 6 R, 0 BB, 5 K).

The Gators added three more runs in the third off Morgan Dunn's RBI single, and two batters later, Jessica Adam's (2-for-3, 2 RBI) two-run double made it a 5-0 game.

Old Westbury broke through in the fifth with a two-out RBI single by Fucci (2-for-4, RBI) to score pinch runner Otilia Bernal to slice the deficit to four runs (5-1).  Old Westbury led off the frame with Sage starting right-hander Katie Kovage (8-5, 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, BB, 4 K) hitting Brittany Chernoff.  Kovage then allowed a single to Katie Rizzo (2-for-3) before plunking Alicia Redguard with the pitch to load the bases.

Sage added one more run in the seventh after a throwing error by second baseman Alexis Ferrero scored Kristen Beikirch (1-for-4, 2 R) for the game's final run.

Game Two: Sage 14, Old Westbury 0 (5 Inn.)
Vadenburg (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 2 R) stroked a two-run single in the first to open the scoring for the Gators.  Sage added RBI singles by Rimawi (3-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 R) and Courtney Haff off Old Westbury starting right-hander Fucci (2-12, 1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER) for a four-run first inning.

The Panthers threatened in the first inning when a double steal advanced runners to second and third, before Delana Murray was thrown out attempting to score by the left fielder.

Sage answered with five more in the second off reliever DeCola (4 IP, 10 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 0 BB, 4 K), highlighted by a pair of RBI singles, a two-run double and a wild pitch to score the ninth run.  Sage tacked on three more runs in the fourth and scored two in the fifth to complete the run-rule victory.

Old Westbury loaded the bases in the fifth with Gisela Gonzalez reaching on a walk, and two batters later, Valdes (2-for-3, SB) and Fucci produced back-to- back singles.  Sage right-handed starter Lindsay Brace (7-7) settled down and retired Bernal on strikes to preserve the shutout.
