Bats lift @OW_Panthers Softball in game two to salvage split with Brooklyn

Old Westbury’s 14 hits tied a season-high in game two

BROOKLYN (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY Old Westbury softball team battled the Brooklyn Bulldogs in a non-conference showdown on Tuesday afternoon at Brooklyn College Field.  After falling in the opener, 2-0, the Panthers salvaged the finale by defeating the Bulldogs 8-4.  Old Westbury now stands at 6-24 on the season, while Brooklyn sits at 16-14 overall.

Game One: Brooklyn 2, Old Westbury 0
Brooklyn starting right-hander Kayla Hill (8-5, 7 IP, BB 7 K) tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout to lift the Bulldogs to a 2-0 victory over the Panthers in the opening game. She also helped her own cause at the plate, as she batted 1-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored.

The only two runs of the contest came in the bottom of the third inning. Chrissy Heyer stroked a one-out single through the left side.  The next batter, Hill, laced a RBI triple to center, scoring Heyer to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.  Samantha Rodriguez (2-for -3) followed with a RBI single scoring Hill from second, giving Brooklyn a 2-0 edge.

Delana Murray slapped a two-out single in third to break the Panthers into the hit column.

The Panthers threatened to knot the game in the top of the seventh inning, as Corrine Protasiewicz singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hill squandered the Panthers' attack by striking out Brittany Chernoff and induced Elizabeth Redguard to pop out to end the game.

Old Westbury starting right-hander Nicole DeCola (3-12, 7 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 6 K) took the hard luck loss.

Game Two: Old Westbury 8, Brooklyn 4
Gabriella Valdes and starting right-hander Amanda Fucci combined for seven of the Panthers' 14-hit barrage to lift Old Westbury to an 8-4 victory in the finale.  Valdez (4-for-4, RBI) collected a career-best four hits and tied a career-high with three runs scored while Fucci (3-for-4, RBI, R) tied a career-high with three hits.  Protasiewicz (2-for-4, 3 RBI, R) and Elizabeth Redguard (2-for-4, RBI, R) each added two hits.  On the mound, Fucci improved to 3-12 on the season, by punching out seven in seven innings of work.

Trailing 1-0 at the end of the first, Jacqueline Perno and Redguard led off the Panthers' second with consecutive singles.  After moving up 60' feet on a Katie Rizzo sacrifice bunt, DeCola smacked an one-out RBI single to plate home Perno to tie the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs right fielder Kristina Bermudez had trouble retrieving DeCola's hit, which allowed Redguard to round third and score to give the Panthers' their first lead of the afternoon, 2-1.

Old Westbury continued their hitting barrage the top of the third inning, as the first three batters successfully reached based. Valdes leadoff the Panthers' frame with a bunt single to third. Fucci followed with a single to left advancing Valdes to third and Fucci took second on the throw. Protasiewicz roped a two-run double to left center to score both Fucci and Valdez, giving Old Westbury a 4-1 edge. Two batters later, Redguard smacked a RBI double which scored Protasiewicz, giving the visitors a 5-1 lead.

The Panthers struck for two more runs in the top of the fourth. The duo of Valdes and Fucci smoked consecutive RBI base-hits to left, giving Old Westbury a 7-2 lead. First, Valdes tripled to left to plate Chernoff and then Fucci singled to score Valdez for the Panthers' seventh run. Protasiewicz's RBI single scored Valdes in the sixth to close out the scoring books.

Ashley Tkacsik (6-4, 7 IP, 14 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 K) took Brooklyn's game-two loss.  Heyer produced three hits and scored two runs while Nunez added two doubles, one RBI and a run scored.
