@OW_Panthers Women’s Lacrosse blasts Mount Saint Vincent in 16-6 Skyline Conference win

Courtney Gallagher set a program record with four assists

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse claimed its first Skyline Conference victory of the season after earning a convincing 16-6 win over the visiting Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins Wednesday afternoon from Panther Park.  Old Westbury (2-6) advances to 1-3 in conference play while the Dolphins (1-7) moved to 0-3.

Courtney Gallagher set a program-record with four assists on the day to go along with six ground balls (tied career-high), six caused turnovers (tied career-high), two draw controls and her 12th goal of the season.  Emily Powell scored a game-high five goals to power the Panther attack.  Powell tied a program record with 11 shots and added five ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Sara Bey netted three goals to go along with career-highs of seven draw controls and six ground balls.  Danielle Weir extended her program-record to eight games for consecutive goal-scoring streak to start a career.  She also contributed career-highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers in addition to controlling three draws to the win.  Halle Johnson added three goals and a career-high five ground balls while   Caitlin Thomas tied a career-high with five ground balls.  Imani Blake followed with two goals (career-high) and Gabriella DiPierno chipped in with one. 

Ashley Gugliuzzo (2-6) made six saves for Old Westbury while Kacie McCormack (1-6) stopped 20 shots in defeat for the Dolphins. 

Shannon Steimel and Kayla Carigliano each scored three goals to pace the Dolphins. 

Powell opened the second-half scoring 26 seconds into play to score her first game-winner of the season for a 7-3 lead.  Powell's goal sparked a 4-0 Panther run as Blake (28:46, 24:29) and Bey followed with goals to make it a 10-3 game.  Following back-to-back goals by Bey at 16:53 and 10:12, Carigliano netted her third goal of the game at 9:20 to make it a 13-6 game.  DiPierno (5:56) sparked a 3-0 Panther run as Powell scored twice to close out the game for the 16-6 final.

Steimel broke the scoring ice one minute into the game to give the Dolphins their lone lead of the game.  Johnson answered 12 seconds later with her nine goal of the season to spark a 5-0 run, capped by Weir's goal at 14:34 for a 5-1 lead.  Gallagher racked up her lone goal at 11:49 before Carigliano close out the first-half scoring books at 1:59 to send a 6-3 game into intermission. 

In the end, Old Westbury set a program-record with seven assists, 51 shots, 42 ground balls and tied a program record with 23 points (16 G, 7 A).     


RAMAPO ROADRUNNERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 11) with a non-conference showdown against the Ramapo Roadrunners at 1 p.m. from Athletic Center Turf in Mahwah, New Jersey.
