@OW_Panthers Baseball walks off with Senior Night win

Old Westbury wins 5-4 in extra innings against CCNY to win seventh straight

Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball pulled off the come-from-behind Senior Night victory at home with Tuesday's 5-4 final in 10 innings against the CCNY Beavers to push its win streak to seven games.

Old Westbury (18-8) honored its 2015 senior baseball class of nine (Jacob Coners, Eddie Hernandez, Christian Faust, Tim Ingram, Caleb Olesen, Jonathan Pagan, Brandon Stein, Christopher Vitale, Nick Yip) with a pre-game ceremony for their dedication to Old Westbury Athletics.

The Beavers (12-10) posted two runs to lead off the opening frame with back-to-back two-out run scoring hits off Old Westbury starting right-hander Tyler Kapela (6 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 K).

Nick Yip (3-for-5, RBI, GW-R) answered with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the first to score Matthew Taurisani to slice Old Westbury's deficit in half (2-1).  Yip's single extended his hitting streak to eight games.

With runners at the corners, Gabrielle Pena pushed home Angel Zapata with a two-out single to give the Beavers a 3-1 lead.  Second baseman Joey Walsh threw out Jonathan Abreu trying to advance to third on the play to escape out the inning.

CCNY took a 4-1 lead in the fourth with Abreu's two-out RBI single to score Nazar Aprahamian.  Old Westbury made two consecutive fielding errors to extend the inning before Abreu drove in the unearned run.
Tommy Ziegen (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R) platted home Christian Faust with a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game.  Brandon Stein followed with a two-out single up the middle to advance Ziegen to third, who then scored off center fielder Kennedy Tavarez's fielding error to trim the deficit to one run.

Jacob Coners reached base in the home half of the fifth with a leadoff single.  Coners then advanced to thirdon a dropped third strike, and then scored off first baseman Ariel Torres' throwing error to tie the game.
Old Westbury right-handed reliever Nick Dorcean (2-1, 4 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 6 K) allowed a leadoff single to Yoribaldis Olivo in the ninth inning.  Olivo then stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Dorcean retired Alberto Franco and Abreu on strikes to strand two runners on base.

Dean Sheridan (2-for-4, BB, 8-game hitting streak) singled to lead off the Panthers' ninth.  Ziegen's sacrifice bunt moved Sheridan into scoring position.  CCNY right-handed reliever Jose Aquino (3-4, 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 BB) walked two-straight Panthers to load the bases.  Aquino then induced a line out and pop out to send the game into extra innings.

Dorcean once again had to work out a jam in the tenth.  Tavarez walked to reach base with one out.  He then stole second and advanced to third on catcher Brandon Stein's throwing error.   Dorcean came back with a swinging strikeout and a ground out to put the Panthers in the driver's seat.

Yip slapped a leadoff double down the right field line to set the table in the tenth.  Aquino intentionally walked two batters in the frame before Ziegen launched a walk-off single to left field to score Yip for the game-winning run.
