@OW_Panthers Baseball puts away John Jay late to extend win streak

Old Westbury takes its eight-game winning streak into Saturday’s Skyline Conference finale versus Purchase


BROOKLYN (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - SUNY Old Westbury baseball extended its winning streak to eight games after pouring on runs in the later innings to hand the John Jay Bloodhounds an 11-3 setback from MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York.  With the win, Old Westbury now sits a 19-8 heading into Saturday's Skyline Conference finale versus Purchase.

Jacob Coners stroked a leadoff double off John Jay (2-22) starting right-hander Michael Fabre (0-1, 6.1 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) to break the Panthers into the hit column.  Coners then stole third and advanced home two batters later off Nick Yip's RBI single to break the scoring ice. 

John Jay even the score in the second when a two-out fielding error by first baseman Dean Sheridan (2-for-4, RBI, R, BB) allowed Brian Cabral (2-for-4, RBI, R) to score the unearned run off Old Westbury starting left-hander Nick Schoen (4-2, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K).  

Coners answered with a sacrifice fly out to left field to score Brandon Stein from third to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the fifth.  Stein led off the frame with a triple.  Two batters later, Yip (2-for-2, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) crushed his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall for a 3-1 lead.

Cabral sliced John Jay's deficit to one run with a two-out RBI single in the sixth to score Zach Hyde.

Christian Faust (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R) drilled a two-run double to score pinch hitter Joey Walsh for the game-winning run, followed by Yip.  Three batters later, Michael Cardino's (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, SB) double scored Faust and Sheridan for a 7-2 lead.  John Jay second baseman committed an error two batters later that allowed Tommy Ziegen to reach base at the same time as Cardino and Jonathan Pagan came around to score for Old Westbury's 9-2 advantage. 

In the eighth, Robert Crocitto and Sheridan each delivered RBI singles to make it an 11-2 game before John Jay's Nestor Amarante (2-for-4, RBI) grounded out to score Nico Rivera (2-for-3, R), BB) to close out the scoring books.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS DAY VERSUS PURCHASE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury hosts the Purchase Panthers on Special Olympics Day with a Skyline Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon in  Old Westbury, New York.  First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
