Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY ---
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) The SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball team collected a straight-set victory (25-8, 25-8, 25-13) over the visiting Medgar Evers Cougars (0-5) Thursday evening in non-conference action from Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers improved to 1-1 on the season as first-year head coach Rich Borawski recorded win No. 1 of his career at Old Westbury.

Old Westbury wasted little time in jumping out to a quick lead.  Shanayia Lloyd served the Panthers to a 5-0 opening set start to give Old Westbury the lead for good.  Sofia Goris then paced the Panthers in the second set to a 12-0 start, where she served up four of her five aces on the day.  Clinging to a 3-1 lead early in the third set, Chelsey Hoffman served the Panthers to five-straight points to grab control of the match for a 7-1 advantage.  Medgar Evers racked up four-straight points midway through the set to make it a 17-10 game before the Panthers answered with an 8-3 run to secure the victory.

Rayn Brown and Hoffman nailed down a match high seven kills to lead the Panthers to victory.  Brown tied a career-high with a .429 hitting percentage, which she originally set in Old Westbury's September 11, 2013 sweep against Medgar Evers.  Brown also added five aces and six digs.  Hoffman contributed 11 assists, four digs and two aces to the win while Goris finished with a match-high eight digs to go along with five aces.  Lloyd and Brittany Buchanan also chipped in with two aces apiece.

Old Westbury totaled 18 kills on 45 attempts to hit .133 for the match, compared to Medgar Evers' -.217 (7 kills, 46 attempts).  The .133 hitting percentage for Old Westbury is notable as the Panthers went over .100 just three times last season.  The Panthers also held the advantage in aces (18-2), assists (18-7) and digs (22-15).

Malado Kaba directed the Cougars' offense with four assists as Kalifa Roberts and Tiffany Benjamin each totaled two kills.

CENTENARY CYCLONES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home for a non-conference showdown Thursday (Sept. 17) evening against the Centenary Cyclones at 6 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center.
