Melissa Muller stopped 17 shots to tie Old Westbury’s single-game saves record

NEWARK, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury lost to the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders 5-0 on Wednesday in non-conference road action from Alumni Field in Newark, New Jersey.

The Panthers (2-3-0) struggled to keep up with Rutgers-Newark (6-1-0) in the first half as the Scarlet Raiders outshot Old Westbury 17-3 and did not allow the Panthers a shot on goal.

Old Westbury goalkeeper Melissa Muller gave up two goals and recorded a career-high 11 saves in the first half.

It took just 5:01 for the Scarlet Raiders to get on the board, as Cristina Estrema scored off a pass from Allyson Daly to break the scoring ice.  In the 29th minute, Sara Corson chipped the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to double the Scarlet Raiders' advantage.

In the 49th minute, Juliana Ceballos scored Rutgers-Newark's third goal of the game.

Soon after, Sara Ramirez went head on with Muller for the score to extend the Scarlet Raiders' lead to four.  Raquel DaCosta finished Nicole Gomez's corner kick in the 72nd minute to close out the scoring books for the 5-0 final.

Despite giving up five goals to five different players, Muller (1-3-0) finished with 17 stops on the day to tie Old Westbury's single-game saves record originally set by Jennifer Kupfer on September 24, 2009 versus Farmingdale State.

Diana Carvalho (6-1-0) made three saves to earn her third clean sheet of the season for Rutgers-Newark.

In the end, Rutgers-Newark held the advantage in shots (28-7), shots on goal (22-3) and corner kicks (5-1).

Edania Martinez tallied four of the Panthers' seven shots on the day as Melissa Outsen fired away two, and Dana Yool added one.
