@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball battles John Jay in season opener

Old Westbury remains at home for Thursday’s non-conference showdown with Medgar Evers

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) The SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball team dropped a season-opening matchup Tuesday evening in straight sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-20) to the visiting John Jay Bloodhounds (1-2) from Clark Athletic Center.   

Olivia O'Keefe paced the Panthers with four kills and six digs.  Chelsey Hoffman dished out 10 assists to direct the offense.  Hoffman also compiled three kills and three digs.  Rayn Brown and Brittany Buchanan each added three kills while Sofia Goris served up two of the team's four aces on the day.  Goris and Shanayia Lloyd finished with four digs apiece.  Old Westbury finished opening night with 16 kills on 55 attempts to hit .109.      

Katrina Zapanta captained the John Jay offense with a match-high 25 assists.  Latanya Buckham nailed down 10 kills while Rachel Eng followed with eight.  Eng also served up five aces and Buckham, Perla Pozo and Savannah Davis each added two of John Jay's 11 on the evening.  Eng and Pozo also led the Bloodhounds with eight digs.  In the end, John Jay hit .191 with 39 kills on 89 swings. 

MEDGAR EVERS COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home for a non-conference showdown Thursday (Sept. 10) evening against the Medgar Evers Cougars at 6 p.m. from Clark Athletic Center.
