Old Westbury improved to 16-3 on the season to extend its win streak to seven with Saturday’s 85-53 non-conference win at John Jay

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball picked up an 85-53 wire-to-wire victory over the John Jay Bloodhounds (4-16) Saturday afternoon in non-conference road action.  The win extends Old Westbury's win streak to seven games while improving its record to 16-3 with six Skyline Conference games left on the schedule.

Four different Panthers scored to open the game with an 8-0 run, and never looked back from the early lead.  Crystal Barnes dropped in a layup to spark a 16-6 Panther run over the final 4:01 for a 26-14 lead heading into the second quarter.   

Ruth Vargas's layup with 8:36 remaining in the half put Old Westbury ahead by double-digits over the final 28:36.  Old Westbury's 7-0 run extended its first-half lead to 18 points (40-22) with 1:21 left before taking a 40-26 advantage into intermission.

Barnes sank a jumper with 1:21 remaining in the third period to put Old Westbury ahead by 20, a lead that only grew over the remaining 11:21 of play.  Raven Pentz's layup later extended Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 34 points (83-49) with 1:38 remaining. 

Barnes used a statline of 23 points (7-of-8 FT), 13 rebounds, three steals and one block to register her fifth-straight double-double (11th of season).  Pentz poured in a season-high 19 points (8-of-15 FG) to go along with three steals.  Vargas contributed 12 points (5-of-7 FG) and seven rebounds off the bench while Jasmine Robinson followed with 11 points, four assists and three steals.  Monique Joseph chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.  Bridgid McNeill added eight rebounds and a game-high two blocks.    

Shailyah Ruiz paced John Jay with nine points, five assists and three steals.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 38.6 percent (32-of-83 FG) from the field, 14.3 percent (1-of-7 3FG) from three-point territory and 74.1 percent (20-of-27 FT) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, John Jay connected on 28.3 percent (15-of-53 FG) from the floor, 28.6 percent (6-of-21 3FG) from beyond the arc and 60.7 percent (17-of-28 FT) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 53-42, scoring 25 second-chance points off 26 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also held the advantage in steals (12-5), assists (13-11), points in the paint (58-10) and fast-break points (14-0) while scoring 35 points off 24 Bloodhound turnovers.

    
ST. JOSEPH'S (L.I.) GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels Wednesday (Feb. 3) to take on the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Golden Eagles in Skyline Conference action at 6 p.m. in Patchogue, New York.  Old Westbury will look to complete the series sweep of the Golden Eagles after claiming a 68-56 home victory (Box Score) on January 20.
