Strong start propels @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball past Sarah Lawrence, 75-66

Old Westbury improved to 5-1 in Skyline Conference play with Monday’s road win

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened the 2016 portion of their schedule Monday afternoon with a 75-66 Skyline Conference road win over the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons from Campbell Sports Center.  With the win, Old Westbury (6-5) improves to 5-1 in conference play while sending the Gryphons (2-9) to 0-7.

The Gryphons went up early off Parker Hagmaier's three pointer to give the home team a 3-0 cushion for their lone lead of the game.  Stephon Odle's layup sparked a key run as Old Westbury answered with a 9-0 spurt from 16:46 to 12:18 to grab the lead for good.  The Panthers would close out the opening half with a 12-4 scoring spree over the final 5:19 to take a 16-point lead (32-16) into intermission.

Sarah Lawrence trimmed its deficit to five points with 48 seconds left as Gabe Eng's three pointer capped an 11-2 Gryphon run to make it a 71-66 game.  Old Westbury made 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to secure the nine-point win. 

P.J. Page, who went 8-of-13 from the field, led the Panthers with career-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds three steals and one block.  Jamail Stanley followed with 17 points (5-of-9 FG) and two steals, while Cody Zafran added 12 points (5-of-9 FG).  Odle dished out a career-high six assists. 

Graham Gilleran's game-high 21 points led two other Gryhons in double digits as Malin Segal scored 13 points and Eng hit for 11.  Hagmaier pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. 

Old Westbury shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the field while connecting on 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from three-point territory and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sarah Lawrence hit on 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor, 48 percent (12-of-25) from beyond the arc and 0-of-5 from the charity stripe.  The Panthers won the boards battle, 35-31, scoring 14 second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in blocks (4-2), points in the paint (40-20), fast-break points (10-4) and bench points (37-23) while converting 17 Gryphons turnovers into 22 points.  


SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to Skyline Conference play on the road Thursday (Jan. 7) at 8 p.m. against the Sage Gators from Kahl Gymnasium.
