Season Statistics

ALBANY, NY ---
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) Despite holding the Gators to their lowest-scoring performance of the season, SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball fell to first-place Sage, 55-34, after a third quarter offensive surge on Thursday evening in Skyline Conference road action inside Kahl Gymnasium.  With the loss, Old Westbury (9-3) moves to 4-1 in conference play while Sage (10-2) improved to 6-0.

Both teams combined to miss the game's opening nine shots before Sage's Krystyn Knockwood dropped in a layup to put the hosts ahead 2:40 into play.  With the game knotted at 4-all, Ruth Vargas scored Old Westbury's next six points for the Panthers' largest lead of the game (10-8) with 51 seconds remaining in the first quarter.  Olivia Ilardi's jumper later made it a 12-11 contest with 20 seconds left before Genevieve Schoff's three-point play gave Sage a 14-12 advantage at the end of 10 minutes of play.

Old Westbury tied the game three times in the second period and held a brief 17-16 lead, but a 7-0 Sage run over the final 4:24 sent the Gators into the half with a 26-19 advantage.

Sage opened the second half with a 12-2 spurt to grow its lead to 17 points (38-21) with 4:53 showing on the third-quarter clock.  Old Westbury pulled within 13 points (38-25) off Alexis Lopez's layup with 3:03 remaining.  Sage outscored the Panthers 9-3 over the final 1:59 to take a 47-28 lead into the fourth period.

The deficit reached 21 points in the fourth as Sage scored eight of the quarter's 14 points for the 55-34 final.

Vargas brought the energy for the Panthers, leading the team with a season-best 10 points and seven rebounds.  Crystal Barnes registered 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals.   Raven Pentz added four assists.

Schoff poured in a game-high 25 points to pace Sage to victory.  Frankie Pearson chipped in with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 23.7 percent (14-of-59) from the field, 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from three-point territory and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from the free-throw line.  The Gators connected on 32.3 percent from the floor (21-of-65), 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle 47-43, scoring just nine second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.  Sage held the advantage in assists (17-5), steals (12-8), blocks (5-4), points in the paint (24-20) and points off turnovers (11-7).
