@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball runs past Keystone for season-opening win

Old Westbury started the 2016-17 campaign off with a 74-30 win in front of the home crowd

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- 
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball opened the 2016-17 campaign Tuesday evening at home with a convincing 74-30 victory over the Keystone College Giants (1-4) inside Clark Athletic Center.  Prior to tip-off, the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship team was celebrated with a ring ceremony.

Old Westbury jumped ahead early as Ruth Vargas dropped in a layup 20 seconds in to break the scoring ice as part of an 8-0 run to start the game.  Moments later, Monique Joseph's layup put the Panthers ahead by double-digits (14-3) with 4:31 remaining in the first period.  Imani Lariosa connected on a triple with 3:04 left to make it a 19-3 game at the end of 10 minutes of play. 

The Panthers used a 20-1 spurt to close out the final 8:41 of the second quarter to take a commanding 39-6 lead into intermission.

Old Westbury opened the second half with a 13-0 run before Keystone responded with nine unanswered points to send a 52-15 game into the fourth quarter.   Davida Warren's layup with 15 second left extended the Panthers' lead to a game-high 46 points.

Joseph totaled game-highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds (career-high) to register her first-career double-double.  Warren debuted with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Vargas followed with 10 points and nine rebounds.  Jasmine Robinson chipped in with eight points, five steals and four assists.  Charlotte Renker and Bridgid McNeill both rejected two shots.  Imani Lariosa added three steals while Joseph, Renker, McNeill and Tori Bellings each nabbed two.    

Nina Hodanich's eight points and three steals paced Keystone.   

Old Westbury connected on 35 percent (28-of-80) from the field, 20 percent (3-of-15 3FG) from three-point territory and 71.4 percent (15-of-21 FT) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Keystone hit on 17.3 percent (9-of-52 FG) from the floor, 0-for-11 from beyond the arc and 54.5 (12-of-22 FT) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 72-32, while scoring 29 second-chance points off 32 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also converted 23 Keystone turnovers into 27 points.  Old Westbury also held the advantage in steals (17-10), blocks (6-0) and assists (15-5).


MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE VALLIANTS  UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens play at the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament hosted by Medgar Evers College on Saturday (Nov. 26) with the Manhattanville College Valliants at 4 p.m. in Brooklyn.
