@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball tangles with USMMA in Skyline nail-biter

Old Westbury returns to action next Saturday (Dec. 17) versus New Jersey City to start a three-game non-conference road trip

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball's last second shot fell short as they suffered a 51-50 Skyline Conference setback at home to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-2, 3-1 Skyline Conference) inside Clark Athletic Center.

Old Westbury (4-2, 1-2 Skyline Conference) opened the scoring with back-to-back layups by Charlotte Renker and Jasmine Robinson to grab a 4-0 lead 1:44 in.  Monique Joseph later sank a jumper to give Old Westbury a 10-5 advantage with 2:24 left in the first period.  Following Tori Bellings' made free-throw with 4:23 remaining in the half, USMMA used a 9-0 run in the final four minutes, sparked by Gabrielle Salazar's 3-pointer, to give the visitors a 24-19 advantage heading into intermission.

USMMA's run continued as Kaleigh D'Arcy's jumper extended the lead to a game-high nine points (28-19) to cap a 14-0 run with 8:10 showing on the third-quarter clock.  Tyra Bellings answered for Old Westbury by scoring eight of the team's 14 points during a 14-6 spurt to tie the game at 34.  Salazar landed four-straight free-throws before USMMA took a 39-35 lead into the fourth period.  Old Westbury continued to battle in the closing quarter as Ruth Vargas' free-throw sparked a 7-0 run to give the Panthers a 48-46 lead.  Joseph put Old Westbury up 50-49 with a layup before D'Arcy answered with the game-winning layup 20 seconds later to give the Mariners a 51-50 lead with 2:30 left.  Old Westbury was unable to convert on a last second jumper by Joseph after she came away with the steal off D'Arcy's inbound pass.  

Tyra Bellings finished with career-high 11 points (3-of-5 3FG) to lead Old Westbury.  Renker followed with 12 rebounds (career-high six offensive) to go along with nine points.  Vargas chipped in with three steals and three blocks (tied career-high) while Joseph registered nine rebounds (five offensive) and eight points.  Robinson totaled eight points and five steals.

D'Arcy led all scorers with a game-high 19 points (6-of-12 FG) to go along with eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.  Salazar poured in 16 points (3-of-6 3FG) and nabbed two steals.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 29 percent (18-of-62) from the field, 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from three-point range and 50 percent (11-of-22) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, USMMA hit on 36.4 percent (16-of-44) from the floor, 50 percent (4-of-8) from beyond the arc and 68.2 percent (15-of-22) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 45-36, while scoring 19 second-chance points off 26 offensive rebounds.  Both teams tied in blocks (4-4) as Old Westbury held the advantage in steals (11-10) while scoring 21 points off 25 Mariner turnovers.

NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY GOTHIC KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Jersey City, New Jersey next Saturday (Dec. 17) for a non-conference showdown against the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights at 1 p.m. inside John J. Moore Athletic Center.
