@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball tops NJCU to return back to winning ways

Four double-digit scorers paced Old Westbury to victory Saturday at New Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 78-65 non-conference road win over the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights (3-8) from John J. Moore Athletic Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. 

Old Westbury (5-2) jumped on the board first with a layup by Jasmine Robinson 8:44.  Tiana Hill's 3-pointer with 8:04 left then put NJCU took its lone lead of the game with 8:04 left with Tiana Hill's 3-pointer for the Gothic Knights' 3-2 advantage.  From there, Charlotte Renker dropped in two points at 7:24 to ignite the Panthers' 16-1 first-quarter run to take a 14-point lead (18-4) with 3:38 remaining.  New Jersey City pulled within five (24-19) in the second stanza before Old Westbury took a 38-30 lead into intermission.

The Panthers opened the third period with a 20-7 run capped by a pair of Bridgid McNeill made free-throws to extend their lead to a game-high 21 points (58-37) with 2:42 left.  New Jersey City answered with a run of their own by scoring 15 of the next 17 points to head into the fourth quarter down by eight (60-52). 

NJCU got within seven points in the fourth off Kiana Briggs' triple with 8:27 left before Old Westbury responded win a 10-3 run to build its lead back up to 14 (72-58).  The Panthers maintained a double-digit lead over the final 1:46 to secure the win.   

Leading the way for Old Westbury with her fourth-career double-double was Ruth Vargas, who poured in a career-high 25 points (11-of-19 FG) to go along with 11 rebounds (eight offensive), one block and one steal.  Monique Joseph totaled 13 rebounds (seven offensive) and tied career-highs with 14 points (6-of-12 FG), four assists and four steals to post her third double-double of the season (fifth career).  Renker followed with 13 points (6-of-12 FG), 10 rebounds and a career-high four blocks for her second double-double of the season.  Robinson chipped in with 11 points, seven steals and six assists.

Tu'ziah Hall paced New Jersey City with a game-high 28 points (10-of-24 FG, 6-of-13 3FG) to go with five assists, four steals and one block.  Shege Haxhaj nabbed five of the team's 18 steals. 

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 44.3 percent (31-of-71) from the field, 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from three-point range and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, NJCU hit on 31.9 percent (22-of-69) from the floor, 36 percent (9-of-25) from beyond the arc and 48 percent (12-of-25) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 53-45, while scoring 30 second-chance points off 26 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also held the advantage in blocks (6-5), assists (17-16) and points off turnovers after converting 27 Gothic Knight miscues into 34 points. 

COLLEGE OF SAINT ELIZABETH EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Morristown, New Jersey next Tuesday (Dec. 20) for a non-conference showdown against the College of Saint Elizabeth Eagles (4-3) at 3 p.m. inside St. Joseph's Gymnasium.
