@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball extends win streak with SUNY Canton victory

Old Westbury scored three players in double-figures to record its third-straight win

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball won their third-straight game Saturday afternoon with an 83-71 non-conference win over the visiting SUNY Canton Kangaroos (4-5) inside Clark Athletic Center. 

Old Westbury (3-5) jumped ahead early with a layup by Jamail Stanley 1:22 in for the game's first points.  Canton then rattled off eight-straight points to take an 8-2 lead.  Trailing 13-11, Stanley laid-in two points at 11:43 to ignite a 12-2 Panther run for a 23-15 advantage before Canton answered with an 8-0 spurt to tie the game at 23 with 6:23 remaining.  With the game tied at 31, Preston Powell caught fire with back-to-back 3-pointers to put Old Westbury back up by six (37-31) with 3:37 left in the half.  Old Westbury took a 40-37 lead into intermission after shooting 6-of-10 from long distance.

The Kangaroos opened the second-half with Adrian Williams' layup and 3-pointer to put Canton ahead, 42-40.  Old Westbury responded with back-to-back buckets by Lylle Ryals and Bradley Eugene to take the lead for good (44-42) as part of Old Westbury's 16-3 run from 18:04 to 12:50.  The Kangaroos countered with an 8-0 run to pull within three (56-53) with 10:31 showing on the second-half clock.  Old Westbury put the game away down the stretch with a 17-5 run from 4:55 to 0:45 to extend the lead to a game-high 15 points (83-68). 

Stanley paced the Panthers with game-highs of 24 points (11-of-25 FG) and 13 rebounds (six offensive) to register his sixth-straight double-double.  He also added three blocks and three steals in 38 minutes of action to his statline.  Powell recoded career-highs of 17 points (4-of-11 3FG), five steals (game-high) and four assists while Stephon Odle chipped in with 11 points (4-of-4 FT).  Shane Smith contributed career-highs of six points (3-of-3 FG) and nine rebounds (four offensive) off the bench. 

Canton was led by Romario Fletcher's 20 points (7-of-12 FG), followed by Sam Annorh (19 points) and Williams (14 points).  Fletcher also totaled 11 rebounds, four steals, four assists and one block in 37 minutes. 

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 43.1 (31-of-72) from the field, 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from three-point range and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Canton hit on 38.5 percent (25-of-65) from the floor, 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from beyond the arc and 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 48-40, scoring 15 second-chance points off 17 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also poured in a season-high 32 bench points while holding the advantage in blocks (10-4), assists (17-13).  Despite committing 21 turnovers, Old Westbury scored 29 points off 25 Kangaroo miscues. 

WILLIAM PEACE UNIVERSITY PACERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court next on December 28 at the Captains Shootout (Dec. 28-29) hosted by Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia.  The Panthers will open against the William Peace University Pacers at 5:30 p.m. inside Freeman Center.
