@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball holds off William Peace with 76-73 win

Old Westbury used a wire-to-wire victory to advance to Thursday’s Captains Shootout championship game in Newport News, Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, VA --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened play at the Captains Shootout Wednesday evening in Newport News, Virginia hosted by Christopher Newport University.  The Panthers (4-5) collected a 76-73 wire-to-wire victory over the William Peace University Pacers (7-3) inside Freeman Center to advance to Thursday's title game versus either the host Captains (6-2) or University of Pittsburgh-Greenburg Bobcats (0-10) at 6 p.m.

The Panthers jumped out to an early lead with five-straight points scored by Stephon Odle to give Old Westbury a 7-2 advantage 2:38 in.  With 8:09 remaining in the opening half, Preston Powell landed a 3-pointer to ignite Old Westbury's 12-2 run capped by Brandon Thomson's layup for a 34-20 lead.  Moments later, Jamail Stanley's tip-in extended the Panthers' lead to 15 with 1:40 left.  Lylle Ryals maintained Old Westbury's 15-point lead with a jumper to send a 42-27 game into intermission.

Old Westbury took a game-high 17-point lead (46-29) off Bradley Eugene's layup with 18 minutes showing on the second-half clock.  The Pacers chipped away by using a 10-2 run to make it a 57-53 game capped by a pair of Chris Thomas free-throws at 8:39.  Old Westbury answered with a 13-3 spurt to go back up by 14 (72-58) with 3:46 remaining. William Peace went on a 14-2 run down the stretch to slice the deficit to two points (74-72) with 31 seconds left.  Eugene's free-throw with five seconds left settled the 76-73 final as Ryan Emfinger's game-tying attempt fell short.

Stanley paced Old Westbury to victory with his seventh-straight double-double (20th in 33 career games at Old Westbury) after registering 17 points (6-13 FG), 11 rebounds, two blocks and one steal.  Odle and Powell both followed with 13 points while Eugene compiled nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks.  Shane Smith chipped in with seven points and five boards off the bench.

Emfinger's game-high 20 points led three other double-digit scorers for William Peace.  Emfinger and Dakota King both grabbed eight rebounds while Jalen Vince nabbed a game-high four steals.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from three-point range and 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, William Peace hit on 30.6 percent (22-of-72) from the floor, 6.7 percent (2-of-30) from beyond the arc and 79.4 percent (27-of-34) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 44-42, while the Pacers scored 20 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also held the advantage in blocks (6-3) as William Peace converted 18 Old Westbury turnovers into 23 points.
