Robinson scores 1,000th point as @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball celebrates seniors

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- 
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball (20-5, 13-3 Skyline) will be seeded third in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship after falling 56-53 in overtime at home to the Sage Gators (20-5, 15-1 Skyline) in Saturday's regular-season finale inside Clark Athletic Center. 
 
No. 3 Old Westbury makes its return to the conference championship after a two-year absence, and will play host to the No. 6 St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) Bears in Tuesday's (Feb. 23) opening round at 7 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center. 

Prior to the start of Saturday's game, seniors Crystal Barnes, Olivia Ilardi, Kendra Jordan, Antoinette Metoyer and Raven Pentz were honored with Old Westbury's annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to SUNY Old Westbury's Athletics.

With 1:57 remaining in the third quarter, Jasmine Robinson nabbed a steal away from Sage and scored her 1,000th career point at 1:55 to tie the game at 29.  Robinson became the third Panther in as many years to join Old Westbury's growing 1,000-point club.

Down 32-30 early in the fourth period, Old Westbury used a 9-0 spurt to take a 40-32 lead with 7:09 showing on the clock.  Sage got back in the game with an 8-2 run from 6:03 to 4:09 to make it a 44-42 game.  A free throw by Monique Joseph put Old Westbury back up by five (47-42) at 3:24.  Old Westbury misfired on its final six attempts as Sage sent a 47-47 game into overtime with a 5-0 run over the final 3:16.

In the extra frame, Old Westbury jumped ahead by four (51-47) in the opening minute of play.  Ruth Vargas closed out the scoring for Old Westbury with a layup at 2:50 to make it a 53-51 game.  From there, Sage scored five unanswered points as Old Westbury missed its final eight field goal attempts.

Ilardi broke the scoring ice 1:15 into play to give the Panthers an early first-quarter lead. Joseph's layup at 2:56 sparked a 9-0 Panther run capped by Vargas' fast-break layup with 23 seconds remaining to extend the lead to a game-high 11 points (16-5). 

After trailing for the opening 18:24, Sage put together a 15-4 scoring edge during the second quarter, and grabbed its first lead of the game with 1:36 left off Frankie Pearson's 3-pointer to head into the half with a 23-20 advantage.

Vargas combined 14 points and 10 rebounds to record her second career double-double.  Pentz netted 13 and Robinson finished with 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.  Joseph totaled 11 rebounds and eight points while Barnes pulled down 12 boards.

Old Westbury shot 28.6 percent (24-of-84) from the field, 5.9 percent (1-of-17) from 3-point range and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sage hit on 31.9 percent (22-of-69) from the floor, 20 percent (6-of-30) from deep and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from the line.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 62-56, scoring 11 second-chance points of 23 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury held the advantage in steals (12-9), blocks (6-5), points in the paint (46-32), fast-break points (14-4) while scoring 21 points for 23 Gator turnovers.
