@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball pushes past Purchase, 72-61

Old Westbury moved to 12-3 in Skyline Conference action with Saturday’s home win

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball got off the strong second-half start to push past the Purchase Panthers at home Saturday with a 71-62 Skyline Conference victory inside Clark Athletic Center.  The win improved Old Westbury (13-7) to 12-3 in conference play while sending Purchase (11-10) to 9-7. 

Kaleem Edwards scored Old Westbury's first six points during the opening 3:04 of play before Purchase answered with a 15-4 run from 16:33 to 11:20 to take an 11-point lead, 21-10.  Jamail Stanley scored eight of Old Westbury's next 15 points as part of a 15-3 spurt to take a 25-24 advantage with 5:49 left in the half.  Keith Lackerson poured in two of his eight first-half points as Old Westbury went up by seven (35-28) with 1:54 remaining.  Old Westbury took a 37-34 lead into the half as Taylor Foster landed a three pointer from just in front of half court to trim Purchase's deficit to three as time expired.   

Old Westbury used a 16-4 run to open the second half to go up by 15 points at 16:34.  Stanley Baker's free throw later extended Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 19 points (59-40) with 13:18 showing on the second-half clock.  Purchase made it a nine-point game (65-56) off Nicholas Jackson's layup with 3:27 left.  Old Westbury maintained a double-digit lead over the final three minutes to earn the 11-point victory.   

Stanley led all scorers with 25 points (9-of-15 FG, 7-of-7 FT) and finished with six rebounds, four steals, four assists and three blocks in 40 minutes of action.  Off the bench, Lylle Ryals followed with 16 points and Lackerson added 10.  P.J. Page chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Michael Soffer's 15 points paced Purchase while Jackson followed with 10.  Joel Neri collected 10 rebounds and three blocks.

Old Westbury shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field, 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from three-point territory and 88.9 percent (16-of-18) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Purchase connected on 40 percent (22-of-55) from the floor, 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from beyond the arc and 52.6 percent from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 33-32, as Purchase scored 14 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury held the advantage in steals (10-5), blocks (5-3), assists (14-12), points in the paint (28-24), fast-break points (16-7) and converted 20 Purchase turnovers into 27 points.      

YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home for Thursday's (Feb. 11) Skyline Conference matchup with the Yeshiva Maccabees at 6 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.
