FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Tuesday afternoon with an 11-1 victory against the North Central (MN) Rams (0-4) from Terry Park in Fort Myers, Florida.

Old Westbury (4-1) jumped ahead in the second inning with Joey Walsh's RBI single to score Joe Boscia to take a 1-0 lead on North Central starter Cody Van Sickle (0-1, 8 IP, 15 H, 11 R, 3 K).

Kevin Lao (2-for-3 , HR, 4 RBI, 2 R, SB) singled home Tommy Ziegen (4-for-5, 2 3B, 3 R, RBI, SB) in the third inning for the eventual game-winning run. Dean Sheridan (2-for-4, RBI, R, SB) and Michael Cardino added back-to-back RBI doubles, while Boscia lifted a sacrifice fly out to right field to plate home Cardino for Old Westbury's 5-0 lead at the end of three frames.

Lao's sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Jesse Russo (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 SB) to put the Panthers ahead by six.

Old Westbury took a commanding lead in the sixth as Lao clubbed a two-run homer to make it a 9-0 game.

North Central scored its lone run as Elijah Valder scored on a passed ball by catcher Casey Surdi in the eighth

Old Westbury starter Tyler Kapela (1-0) struck out six batters in five innings of three-hit shutout ball to earn the win. Raymond Winans (2 IP, 1 H) and Joseph Nicoletti (2 IP, 3 K) combined to close out the final four innings to preserve the win in relief of Kapela.

OTTERBEIN CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Wednesday (Mar. 2) against the Otterbein Cardinals in Fort Myers, Florida. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at Player Development Complex #1 .
