OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball opened Skyline Conference play Saturday at home against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners and Purchase College Panthers inside Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury (1-10, 1-1) lost in three sets to USMMA (5-4, 3-0) in the opener, 25-8, 25-17 and 25-6, before securing its first win of the season with a 25-22, 25-17 and 25-8 victory over Purchase (0-11, 0-2).
Against USMMA,
Sofia Goris handed out four assists to direct the Panthers' offense as
Ruth Vargas and
Amanda Neenan both nailed down three kills. Goris, Neenan and
Alicia Gewirtz paced Old Westbury with three digs while
Marie McKenzie totaled two blocks, followed by Vargas' one. McKenzie also totaled Old Westbury's lone ace.
Nicole Ibinson and Dominique Pope led USMMA with a match-high six kills. Kyleigh Kappas handed out 21 assists and served six of the team's 20 aces. Kappas also led the way with two blocks and five digs.
In the finale versus Purchase, Vargas led the way with seven aces, seven kills and nine digs. Goris dished out a career-high16 assists to go along with four aces and four digs. Neenan served six (career-high) of the team's season-high 20 aces in addition to her five kills and four digs.
Olivia O'Keefe hit a match-high .556 with five kills on nine swings. McKenzie added three blocks, three kills and five digs.
Maura Gribbins totaled 19 kills and eight digs to lead Purchase. Kaitlyn Pillig used 11 assists and 10 digs to record the match's lone double-double while Isis Gonzalez served four of Purchase's eight aces.
SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE GRYPHONS AND COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 1) for a non-conference tri-match hosted by Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. The Panthers open at 1 p.m. with the College of Staten Island Dolphins followed by a 3 p.m. showdown with the host Gryphons from Campbell Sports Center.
