Strong start propels @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball past Maritime, 89-72

Jamail Stanley produced 31 points and 13 rebounds to send Old Westbury to Saturday’s Skyline Conference road win

THROGGS NECK, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball outscored the Maritime College Privateers (6-7, 2-4 Skyline) by 17 points in the first-half Saturday afternoon to send the Panthers to an 89-72 Skyline Conference road win in Throggs Neck, New York.    

The Privateers jumped ahead first with a 3-pointer by Tim Hoch 44 seconds in.  Old Westbury (6-7, 3-2 Skyline) then landed back-to-back triples by Lylle Ryals and Stephon Odle to double its advantage (6-3) with 18:24 left in the half.  Maritime regained a 21-20 lead with 7:17 remaining before Jamail Stanley dropped in two of his 16 first-half points to spark a 21-4 Panther run over the final 6:22 for Old Westbury's 41-24 halftime lead.  Preston Powell's layup with 1:50 left gave Old Westbury a double-digit lead for the game's final 21:50 of play.    

Old Westbury opened the second half with a jumper by Ryals to grow the lead to 19 (43-24) with 19:34 left.  Maritime then scored nine of the next 11 points from 18:59 to 16:22 to pull within 12 (45-33).  The Panthers later used a 13-6 run to extend their lead to a game-high 21 points (67-46) with 11:14 showing on the second-half off Odle's 3-pointer.  The Privateers closed the gap back to 12 (80-68) with four minutes remaining but were unable to overcome the double-digit deficit.        

Stanley finished with game-highs of 31 points (9-of-15 FG, 13-of-16 FT), 13 rebounds (six offensive), six assists and three steals to go along with one block to register his 22nd career double-double (ninth of season).  Ryals netted 17 points (4-of-6 3FG) while Luckens Victor followed with 14 points (7-of-10 FG), nine rebounds and one block.  Odle contributed eight points (2-of-4 3FG), four assists and three steals to Old Westbury's victory. 

Patrick MacDonald totaled 24 points, 11 rebounds (seven offensive) and two blocks to pace the Privateers while Hoch poured in 19 points (7-of-8 FG).

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the field, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range and 72 percent (18-of-25) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Maritime hit on 33.8 percent (23-of-68) from the floor, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from beyond the arc and 72 percent (18-of-25) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 48-39, scoring 20 second-chance points off 15 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also held the advantage in steals (12-5), blocks (5-3) and assists (20-14) while scoring 15 points off 16 Privateer turnovers.
