Gameday Program

OLD WESTBURY, NY ---
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) In a rematch of the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship, SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball put together a repeat performance by capturing a 75-62 league win Saturday afternoon over the visiting The Sage Colleges Gators (13-6, 9-3 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.

Sage jumped out to an 8-0 lead as Old Westbury (14-3, 7-3 Skyline) misfired on its first-10 attempts from the field before Monique Joseph's layup put the Panthers on the board 4:41 in.  Entering the second quarter trailing 17-9, Old Westbury used a 17-2 run to take a six-point lead (26-20) capped by Joseph's lay-in with 6:18 left.  With 5:34 remaining, Ruth Vargas connected on her fourth-straight shot from the field to score nine of the Panthers' opening 19 points of the second stanza to make it a 28-22 game.  Old Westbury later extended its lead to 13 points (36-23) off a Charlotte Renker layup with 2:11 left before taking a 39-27 advantage into intermission.

Sage stormed out of the second-half gates to trim its deficit to five (43-38) with seven-unanswered points from 7:39 to 5:01.  Clinging to a seven-point lead (52-45) heading into the fourth quarter, Vargas' layup gave the Panthers a double-digit lead for good with 6:58 left.  Old Westbury opened the final period with a 15-3 run to take a game-high 19-point lead (67-48) with 3:38 showing on the clock.

Renker led the way with game-highs of 19 points, 16 rebounds (career-high) and three blocks to register her sixth double-double of the season.  Vargas finished with 17 points (8-of-16 FG, 1-of-2 3FG), nine rebounds (four offensive), four steals and one block.  Jasmine Robinson followed with 16 points (6-of-6 FT) and three steals while Joseph chipped in with 12 points, 13 rebounds (tied career-high eight offensive) and two steals for her fourth double-double of the season.

Macie Holmes contributed 17 points (6-of-12 FG) and two steals to pace Sage.  Frankie Pearson scored 13 points while Genevieve Schoff grabbed 13 rebounds (four offensive) and poured in 10 points.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 41.1 percent (30-of-73) from the field, 10 percent (1-of-10) from 3-point range and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Sage hit on 30.4 percent (21-of-69) from the floor, 25 percent (8-of-32) from beyond the arc and 75 percent (12-of-16) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 58-39, scoring 22 second-chance points off 24 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers also held the advantage in steals (11-7), blocks (5-3) and assists (16-12) while scoring 17 points off 14 Gator turnovers.
