@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball swipes 78-75 Skyline Conference victory from Purchase

Old Westbury extended its win streak to seven behind Jamail Stanley’s career-high seven steals


PURCHASE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball claimed a closely contested 78-75 Skyline Conference road victory Tuesday evening against the Purchase College Panthers (12-7, 6-5 Skyline) inside Purchase College Gymnasium.  The win extended Old Westbury's (12-7, 8-2 Skyline) win streak to seven.

Brian Berrios connected from deep to give Purchase the early 3-0 advantage 56 seconds in.  Old Westbury responded with five unanswered points after Lylle Ryals' triple made it 5-3 with 17:12 remaining in the first half.  With the score tied at 20 with 11:45 showing on the first-half clock, Kewan Beebe scored the next seven points to push Purchase's lead to five (27-22) with 9:20 left.  Terrin Roland's layup sparked Old Westbury's 14-2 run from 8:56 to 4:47 to the lead to a game-high seven points (36-29).  Purchase responded with a 7-0 run after Givvion Jones threw down a dunk to tie the game at 36 with 3:15 remaining.  With 1:18 left in the period, Jamail Stanley dropped in a layup off one of his career-best seven steals on the night.  Bradley Eugene knocked down a jumper to close out the half to give Old Westbury a 40-38 advantage heading into intermission.

Purchase opened the second half with a 7-2 run after Michael Soffer connected from long distance push the lead to three (45-42).  Stephon Odle sank a pair of free-throws to ignite an 11-5 run as Old Westbury grabbed a 53-50 lead with 13:58 remaining.  The game saw seven lead changes with four ties from 13:26 to 3:59 until Odle stuck a jumper to put Old Westbury ahead for good (71-69) with 3:51 showing on the second-half clock.  Purchase pulled within two (77-75) down the stretch before Ryals knocked down a free-throw with eight seconds left to settle the 78-75 final.

Stanley totaled game-highs of 25 points (8-of-17 FG, 9-of-10 FT), nine rebounds and seven steals to go along with three assists and one block.  Ryals followed with 15 points (5-of-9 FG, 4-of-6 3FG) and two steals.  Odle (4-of-9 FG, 2-of-5 3FG) and Stanley Baker (6-of-10 FG) chipped in with 12 points apiece.

Soffer finished with 21 points (7-of-15 3FG), four rebounds and two steals to pace Purchase.  Jones poured in 17 points (8-of-14 FG) and added seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals to his statline.  Berrios scored 16 points and controlled the offense with a game-high eight assists.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the field, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from 3-point range and 75 percent (12-of-16) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Purchase hit on 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor, 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from beyond the arc and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 42-38, scoring 15 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.  Purchase also held the advantage in blocks (5-2) and assists (17-13) while Old Westbury held the edge in steals (11-7).  Old Westbury scored 12 points off 15 Purchase turnovers.
