@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball storms past St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) to push win streak to eight

Old Westbury picked up a convincing 97-69 road win Saturday evening in a rematch of the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship

BROOKLYN --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball used a strong opening half to claim a convincing 97-69 Skyline Conference road victory over the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (4-16, 1-11 Skyline) Saturday evening in a rematch of the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship inside Hill Center.  With the win, Old Westbury (13-7, 9-2 Skyline) extended its winning streak to eight.
 
Jamail Stanley knocked down a jumper in the opening 22 second to break the scoring ice and give Old Westbury the lead for good.  Alec Willis connected from deep 1:20 later to bring St. Joseph's within one (4-3).  Stanley's layup sparked a 28-5 run from 17:11 to 7:53 as Preston Powell landed a 3-pointer at 15:06 to give Old Westbury a double-digit lead for the final 35:06.  Old Westbury extended its first-half lead to 28 points (41-13) with 5:51 left after Terrin Roland sank a pair of free throws.  Lukens Victor threw down a dunk in the remaining 54 seconds to send the Panthers into the break with a 47-23 advantage.
 
Old Westbury opened the second half with a triple from Lylle Ryals to make it a 50-23 game with 19:51 left.  Moments later, Matt McQuillen scored six of the next eight points for St. Joseph's to trim the deficit to 22 points (53-31) with 18:17 showing on the second-half clock.  Stanley scored nine of his 15 second-half points from 17:06 to 14:31 to push the Panthers' lead to 28 points (65-37).  Old Westbury continued to push the pace to extend the advantage to a game-high 34 points (82-48) off a pair of Stanley free throws with 7:55 remaining.  The Bears used a 9-2 run to help slice the deficit to 26 (84-58) with 5:10 remaining.  Both teams scored nine points apiece in the remaining 1:11  to settle the 97-69 final.
 
Stanley posted game-highs of 30 points (12-of-20 FG) and 16 rebounds (seven offensive) to go along with four assists and two steals to register his 14th double-double of the season (27th career).  Ryals followed with 21 points (8-of-15 FG, 5-of-10 3FG), eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.  Powell (4-of-9 3FG) and Victor (5-of-8 FG) contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Stephon Odle controlled the offense with a game-high eight assists.
 
McQuillen finished with 13 points (4-of-8 FG) to pace St. Joseph's.  Aaron Parra poured in 12 points (5-of-10 FG) and grabbed 12 rebounds while Christian Giles scored 11 points.
 
In the end, Old Westbury connected on 50 percent (38-of-76) from the field, 41.2 percent (14-of-34) from 3-point range and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, St. Joseph's hit on 32.4 percent (23-of-71) from the floor, 35.1 percent (13-of-37) from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe.  St. Joseph's won the boards battle, 47-44, while Old Westbury scored 10 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury also held the edge in blocks (4-2), steals (9-1) and assists (24-11) while scoring 21 points off 13 Bear turnovers.
 
YESHIVA UNIVERSITY MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns home to start a three-game homestand next Tuesday (Feb. 7) with a Skyline Conference Play4Kay showdown against the Yeshiva University Maccabees at 5 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.
