@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball wins season opener in dramatic fashion over Baruch

Old Westbury’s five-game homestand continues next Wednesday (Nov. 29) versus Medgar Evers College

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com--- SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened the 2017-18 season Tuesday evening with a 79-75 non-conference home victory over the Baruch College Bearcats (2-1) inside the Clark Athletic Center.

The Panthers (1-0) came out of the gate strong as they connected on their first five-field goals powered by a 12-2 run in the opening minutes. Terrin Roland's three pointer kick-started the spurt and Yancy Ulysse hit a three pointer to end the big run 3:19 in.  The Panthers extended their first-half lead to a game-high 17 points off a pair of free throws by Preston Powell with 4:51 remaining.  Old Westbury's bench contributed 15 first-half points to send the home team into intermission with a 44-34 lead.   

With 14:28 remaining in the second half, Alan McDonald electrified the home crowd with a layup through contact and followed by a free throw to put the finishing touches on a three-point play to maintain Old Westbury's 56-47 lead.  The Bearcats responded with a 13-2 run with 10:33 left in the game to knot the score at 58.  Baruch later used an 8-2 spurt as Andre Harris' free throw gave the Bearcats their lone lead of the game with 3:01 showing on the second-half clock.  Roland responded with a three pointer 17 seconds later to give Old Westbury the lead for good (75-73) as the Panthers outscored Baruch 7-2 in the final 2:44 to preserve the win.     

McDonald came off the bench and contributed in a big way to lead the scoring charge with 15 points for the Panthers.  Roland (11 points), Ulyssse (11 points), Powell (10 points) and Julieon Boney (10 points) all scored in double-digits.  Roland dished out a game-high six assists while Powell tied a career-high with five steals.  Stanley Baker added two of the team's four blocks.  

Chimaechi Ekekeugbor finished with game-highs of 21 points (6-of-12 FG, 8-of-8 FT), 17 rebounds and four blocks to pace Baruch.  Bryler Paige followed with 15 points (12-for-12 FT) and six rebounds as William Sixsmith chipped in with 13 points.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the field, 37.5 percent (9-of-24) from 3-point range and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Baruch hit on 31.8 percent (21-of-66) from the floor, 23.1 percent (6-of-26) from beyond the arc and 90 percent (27-of-30) from the charity stripe.  Baruch won the boards battle, 43-39, while Old Westbury scored 12 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury held the advantage in assists (17-9) and steals (9-7) while Baruch finished with a 5-4 edge in blocks.  The Panthers scored 14 points off 15 Bearcat misuses.  Old Westbury also led in multiple major categories including fastbreak points (13-2), points in the paint (32-30), and bench points (29-22).
