@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball topples New Rochelle for fourth-straight season-opening win

Old Westbury will play Southern Vermont College in Sunday’s (Nov. 26) Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament championship game

BROOKLYN, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball used a 95-69 non-conference win over the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (0-3) Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn, New York to register their fourth-straight season-opening win.  With the win, Old Westbury (1-0) advances to Sunday's (Nov. 26) Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament championship game at 3 p.m. versus the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers (1-3) inside Cougars Cave.

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice 35 seconds in after a pair of free throws by Tori Bellings followed by Charlotte Renker's layup to make it a 4-0 game.  Dar'neisha Brice knocked down a jumper to put New Rochelle on the board with 8:29 showing on the first quarter clock.  Old Westbury responded with a 25-4 run courtesy of Tori Bellings' fastbreak layup at 7:32 to close out the quarter with a double-digit lead (29-6).

New Rochelle opened the second stanza scoring with back-to-back layups by Melissa Perez and Brice with 7:34 remaining (29-10).  Renker dropped in two to ignite the Panthers' 12-2 run from 6:30 to 3:02 (40-12).  The Blue Angels closed out the remaining 2:16 of the second quarter with an 8-4 run to head into intermission trailing Old Westbury, 44-20. 

With 3:10 left in the third quarter, Davida Warren's free-throw stretched Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 31 points (67-36).  New Rochelle responded with a 13-4 run to trim Old Westbury's lead to 22 points (71-49) heading into the final quarter.  

Old Westbury pushed its lead back up to 31 points (85-54) after Destiny Marino's free-throw with 6:05 showing on the fourth quarter clock.  New Rochelle's final serge would come from a jumper by Brice that kickstarted a 15-3 run from 6:00 to 1:39 to pull within 19 points (88-69).  The Panthers scored the final seven points with 1:16 remaining to settle the 95-69 final. 

Monique Joseph totaled 15 points (7-of-7 FT), 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals to register her seventh-career double-double to lead Old Westbury.  Renker followed with 14 points and seven rebounds as Bridgid McNeill went for 10 points and 12 rebounds to record her third-career double-double.  Tyra Bellings provided a spark for the Panthers off the bench with 11 points (2-of-3 3FG) and four assists. Tori Bellings dished out a game-high six assists.

Brice's 29 points led all scorers for New Rochelle.  Perez and Caitlin Harrison contributed to the scoring with 10 points apiece.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 44.2 percent (34-of-77) from the field, 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from 3-point range and 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, New Rochelle hit on 35.4 percent (23-of-65) from the floor, 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from beyond the arc and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 61-31, while scoring 26 second-chance points off 25 offensive rebounds.  Both teams were even in blocks at four apiece while Old Westbury held the advantage in assists (21-14) and New Rochelle finished with a 11-7 edge in steals.  The Panthers scored 14 points off 17 Blue Angel turnovers.  Old Westbury also led in multiple major categories including fastbreak points (14-4), points in the paint (48-20), and bench points (40-16).
