Four Panthers score in double-digits to help Old Westbury capture the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament title for the second-consecutive year

BROOKLYN, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball captured a convincing 92-32 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon over the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers (1-4) in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament championship game hosted by Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York.  With the win, Old Westbury claimed the title for the second-consecutive year to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Charlotte Renker was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after averaging 19.0 points (55.2% FG), 14.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 assists in two games.  Tyra Bellings recorded 9.5 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 rebounds per game to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Bridgid McNeill broke the scoring ice for Old Westbury 2:59 in before Renker dropped in two of her game-high 24 points to make it a 4-0 game with 6:47 remaining in the opening quarter.  Sarah Poirier's three-pointer 44 seconds later sliced Southern Vermont's deficit to one (4-3) before the Panthers buried six-straight points to extend its lead to a quarter-high seven points (10-3).  The Mountaineers knocked down four-straight free-throws to head into the second quarter trailing, 13-7.

Within the first ten seconds of play in the second stanza, a block by Renker turned into a Destiny Marino layup to ignite a 27-4 Old Westbury run that lasted 6:55 to extend the lead to 31 (42-11).  The Panther defense held the Mountaineers the three points in the final 2:28 of the half to send a 33 point game (47-14) into intermission.

Old Westbury used a 24-4 run for most of the third quarter to make it a 73-18 game.

Old Westbury took a game-high 65 point lead (83-18) with 7:26 remaining in the final period off  Alexis Lopez's triple.  Southern Vermont used an 11-4 spurt to pull within 55 points (87-32) with 44 seconds left before Old Westbury scored five unanswered points to settle the 92-32 final.

To go along with her efficient shooting from the field (9-of-12) and free-throw line (6-of-7), Renker finished with a career-high 21 rebounds (seven offensive) and three blocks to register her 12th-career double-double to lead Old Westbury.  Davida Warren followed with 12 points (5-of-7 FG) and 11 rebounds to record her third-career double-double.  McNeill chipped in with 12 points (6-of-10 FG) and career-best five steals while Monique Joseph scored 10 points (5-of-8 FG) and nabbed four steals.

Poirier's 13 points led Southern Vermont as Maddy Main contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.

Old Westbury held the advantage in blocks (5-2), assists (20-4) and steals (12-8). The Panthers scored 32 points off 24 Mountaineer turnovers.  Old Westbury also led in multiple major categories including points in the paint (66-8) and bench points (42-0).
