@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball battles Cortland in non-conference home finale

Old Westbury returns to the court next at the St. John Fisher College Tournament (Dec. 29-30) against the host Cardinals

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball were unable to keep up with a hot shooting SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (8-1) team Saturday afternoon en route to dropping a 90-66 non-conference decision in their non-conference home finale inside Clark Athletic Center.

After Old Westbury (3-4) jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage, both teams traded leads before Cortland used an 11-2 run to build a seven-point cushion (16-9) with 14:32 remaining.  Brendan Fitzpatrick's 3-pointer with 15:38 showing on the first-half clock put Cortland ahead for good, 10-7.  The Red Dragons continued to push the tempo with a layup by Justin Cooper to go up 20-11.  Old Westbury answered with Terrin Roland's 3-pointer followed by a jumper by Stanley Baker to trim the deficit to four (20-16) with 10:41 remaining.  Playing with the lead for the final 35:38 of play, Nicky Bonura converted a pair of free throws to make it a 36-25 game.  James Morales scored five-straight points in the final 51 seconds to extend Cortland's lead to 15 (41-26) at intermission.

Cortland's lead climbed to 31 (59-28) off back-to-back Carrel Joseph 3-pointers as part of an 18-2 Red Dragon run that opened the half.  In a period that saw Cortland outscore Old Westbury by nine (49-40), Jake DiSanto's 3-pointer with 7:01 left helped grow the advantage to a game-high 32 points (78-46) .

Alan McDonald used 16 points (7-of-15 FG), 10 rebounds and four assists to post his first-career double-double in leading Old Westbury.  Roland added 13 points, four assists and two blocks.  Preston Powell chipped in with four assists while Brandon Thomson totaled a career-high two steals off the bench.    

Zach Lydon's game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds carried Cortland to victory.  Cooper followed with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists as Joseph added 14 points.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the field,  13.8 percent (4-of-29) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Cortland hit on 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the floor, 41 percent (16-of-39) from beyond the arc and 100 percent (16-of-16) from the charity stripe.  Cortland won the boards battle, 44-34, while scoring 18 second-chance points off 13 offensive rebounds. The Red Dragons also scored 16 points off converted nine points off nine Panther turnovers.  Old Westbury finished with the advantage in blocks (5-3), points in the paint (28-24) and bench scoring (40-27).  

ST. JOHN FISHER COLLEGE CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Pittsford, New York for the St. John Fisher College Tournament (Dec. 29-30) to open Friday against the host Cardinals (3-4) at 8 p.m. inside Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium.
