@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball dominates St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) for 79-63 Skyline Conference Senior Day win

The Panthers were paced by a trio of double-doubles to lead the team to its ninth-straight victory

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball dominated the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (8-14, 6-9 Skyline) with a 79-63 Skyline Conference Senior Day victory Saturday afternoon inside Clark Athletic Center.

Prior to tip-off, Old Westbury's 2016 Skyline Conference Championship team was celebrated with a banner unveiling ceremony followed by seniors Erica Ward (2014-15, 2016-17), Alexis Hart (2015-2017), Ruth Vargas (2010-12, 2014-17) and Jasmine Robinson (2013-2017) were honored with the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their dedication to SUNY Old Westbury Athletics.

St. Joseph's opened the scoring with five unanswered points 1:47 in.  Charlotte Renker's 3-point play with 2:30 left sparked an 8-1 Old Westbury (19-3, 12-3 Skyline) run to close out the first quarter with a 19-15 lead.  Bridgid McNeill's layup with 2:07 left gave the Panthers the lead for final 32:07 of play.  The Panthers opened the second stanza with an 8-2 run to push the advantage to double-digits (27-17) with 6:23 left.  St. Joseph's battled back to trim the deficit to six (33-27) with 19 seconds remaining before Monique Joseph's layup sent the lead back up to eight to give Old Westbury a 35-27 advantage at the break.  

The Bears made it a five-point game (35-30) 55 seconds into second-half play before Old Westbury used an 11-2 run from 8:44 to 6:01 to extend the lead to double-digits (46-32).  The Panthers later put together an 18-8 fourth-quarter spurt from 8:26 to 2:46 extend the lead to game-high 19 points (74-55).  

Vargas finished with 18 points (8-of-12 FG), 12 rebounds, three steals and one block to register her 10th-career double-double.  Joseph followed with 16 points (7-of-11 FG), 10 rebounds (five offensive) and three steals to post her sixth-career double-double.  Renker contributed 12 points (4-of-8 FG, 4-of-5 FT), nine rebounds and four blocks while Tori Bellings added 11 points (5-of-6 FT) and a career-high 10 assists to tap her second-career double-double.  Robinson poured in 13 points while McNeill grabbed nine rebounds (seven offensive) and swatted three shots off the bench.

Destiny Marino led all scorers with 24 points (6-of-6 FT) and three steals to pace St. Joseph's.  Victoria Porcasi chipped in with 16 points (4-of-4 FT) and three steals while Lauren Quesada scored 14 points (6-of-7 FT) to go with six rebounds (four offensive) and four steals.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 44.3 percent (31-of-70) from the field, 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from 3-point range and 60 percent (15-of-25) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, St. Joseph's hit on 33.9 percent (21-of-62) from the floor, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from beyond the arc and 90 percent (18-of-20) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 54-32, scoring 15 second-chance points off 24 offensive rebounds.  St. Joseph's held the advantage in steals (16-10) while the Panthers held the edge blocks (9-2) and assists (19-8), scoring 19 points off 23 Bear turnovers.

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (L.I.) GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels to Patchogue, New York next Tuesday (Feb. 14) for a Skyline Conference showdown with the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (6-16, 5-10 Skyline) at 6 p.m. inside Danzi Center.
