@OW_Panthers Baseball opens season at Stevens

Old Westbury remains on the road for next Friday’s (Feb. 24) showdown at No. 15/19 Kean

HOBOKEN, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened the 2017 campaign on the road against the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks (1-1) with a 5-3 non-conference setback from Dobbelaar Baseball Field in Hoboken, New Jersey.
 
Old Westbury threatened in the opening frame as Tommy Ziegen (3-for-4, SB) produced a two-out single for the Panthers' first hit of the campaign.  Ziegen then stole second and advanced to third on balk before Stevens' starter Quinn DiPasquale (W, 1-0: 5.2 IP, 3 R, 5 H, BB, 4 K) induced a Kevin Lao pop up to escape out of the jam.    

Panther righty Adam Heidenfelder debuted with the opening-day start and did not disappoint.  Heidenfelder retired 10 of his first 11 batters faced and limited Stevens to just two hits while striking out three batters in four innings of work. 

Trey Pizzutello (L, 0-1: 1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 H) relieved Heidenfelder in the fifth, where Stevens capitalized on four infield errors that allowed four unearned runs to cross the plate.

Old Westbury answered in the sixth with a single by Michael Cardino, followed by Jesse Russo drawing a walk before David Hawley's single scored two to slice the deficit in half (4-2).  Three batters later, Dean Sheridan's infield ground out scored Hawley to make it a 4-3 game. 

Carlos Leon led off Stevens' eighth with a home run to right field off reliever Christian Tessitore (2.1 IP, R, 2 H, BB, 2 K) to settle the 5-3 final.  Zeph Walters fanned eight Panthers and scattered one hit in 3.1 innings of work to record his first save of the season.

NO. 15/19 KEAN UNIVERSITY COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond next Friday (Feb. 24) for a non-conference road matchup versus the No. 15/19 Kean University Cougars (2-0) in Union, New Jersey.  First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. inside Jim Hynes '63 Stadium.
