Ninth-inning rally sends @OW_Panthers Baseball to 5-4 win at No. 15/19 Kean

Old Westbury used a two-out rally in the ninth to register first win of the season at No. 15/19 Kean

UNION, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball rallied in the ninth inning to capture a convincing 5-4 non-conference road win Friday afternoon from the No. 15/19 Kean University Cougars (4-1) in Union, New Jersey.  Old Westbury (1-1) has now won its last two games at nationally ranked Kean.

Kean starter Tyler Hopman (1-1, 9 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 9 K) issued leadoff walks to set the table for Tommy Ziegen, who singled through the left side to score Jesse Russo for Old Westbury's 1-0 lead.  Two batters later, a costly throwing error by shortstop Ivan Rivera allowed David Hawley and Ziegen to cross home plate to extend Old Westbury's lead to three at the end of the first frame.

Panther starter Daniel Aguilo (ND, 5.1 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 K) cruised through two innings until a one-out triple, followed by an infield ground out, scored Mike Fidanza to slice Kean's deficit to 3-1 in the third.

Hopman settled down and silenced the Panthers' bats in frames three through six until Gianni Carbone slapped a one-out single in the seventh.

Kean tied the game in the sixth with a one-out RBI double by Nick Polizarro (2-for-4, 2 RBI) to end Aguilo's day.

Panther reliever Preston Zanon surrendered a two-out RBI single to Matt Krupa (3-for-4) to plate home Rivera for the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.

After threatening in the eighth, Old Westbury delivered in the ninth with a timely two-out RBI single by Paul Rapoli that scored Dean Sheridan to tie a 4-4 game.  Hopman then uncorked a wild pitch to send Rapoli to second before Carlos Balmaceda (2-for-4) drilled a single through the right side to score Rapoli for the game-winning run.

Trey Pizzutello (1-1, 2 IP, 2 H) took over in the eighth and retired six of eight batters to record his first win of the season.

BARUCH COLLEGE BEARCATS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the diamond Saturday (Feb. 25) afternoon for a non-conference road doubleheader with the Baruch College Bearcats (0-0) in Brooklyn, New York.  First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. inside MCU Park.
